POVERTY

“The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.”- Franklin Delano Roosevelt

What is the big problem with poverty?
-We know that poverty is not a good thing. We know that the world would be a better place if poverty can be eradicated. What we don’t know is how to achieve this for sure.

Poverty has been around for far too long. Why hasn’t anybody solved it?
-The answer to this is simple. We have yet to create a functional economic system capable of distributing resources in a way that ensures everybody has enough for a sustainable life.

A boring definition of poverty
‘Poverty is defined as the general scarcity, dearth, or the state of one who lacks a certain amount of material possessions or money. It is a multifaceted concept, which includes social, economic, and political elements.’ It is important to note that poverty may not mean the same thing for everyone. As complex as it is, it can be divided into six types of poverty.

T he types of poverty:
1. Situational poverty
2. Generational poverty
3. Absolute poverty
4. Relative poverty
5. Urban poverty
6. Rural poverty

For the purposes of this article, I will try to look at poverty as a whole, rather than focussing on a single area.

Frequent assumptions made about poverty that are just wrong

1.‘Poor people deserve to be poor because they are lazy and refuse to work.’
→ Right, if only world poverty
