Indonesia Reading Literacy in PISA
Literacy in general means a person’s ability to read and write. Reading skill is the key of literacy. Once a reading literacy is achieved, a person can gain knowledge, use media and technology as well as to communicate and contribute in their society. Thus, researchers are continuing to improve world reading literacy through The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). PISA was first implemented in 2002. This essay focuses on the definition of reading literacy reading assessment by PISA, Indonesia reading literacy score in PISA and the factors of low PISA reading literacy score of Indonesia.

One of factors that may influence lower reading score is the teacher effective teaching. Meeks (2013) stated that Teacher’s qualifications, knowledge, and methods in teaching reading give a great impact of students’ knowledge; they play the main roles in students’ reading achievements. In fact, Indonesian teacher’s knowledge about reading literacy in PISA is not sufficient, so the content delivery from teacher to students is not maximized. But teacher is not merely to blame. Indonesian poor reading habits have been cornering with low reading literacy achievement. On the report of many researches, Indonesian people do not like reading. They read only when they are given assignment by teachers. Limited access to books and library also affects lack reading interests. The article “Why Don’t Teens Read For Pleasure Like They Use To?” by Jennifer Ludden, writes about teens not reading as much and why aren’t they reading. Ludden uses logos and people to show the drop-off reading among teens. The author utilize people and data to support the drop-off in reading amidst teens.
The proposal that adolescents’ interest in literature has diminish in America is clearly voiced by Dana Gioia, in the article, “Why Literature Matters”. Although, Gioia used different methods to persuade his readers, one way he tried to persuade is by indicating the disadvantages of not reading in society today. One of the many disadvantages Gioia told to persuade his readers was through the effects it had on a child’s development, with its mind. A quote from the article, stated, “... A time of crucial intellectual and emotional development bypass the joys and challenges of literature is a troubling trend”.
There’s been a lot of controversy about online literacy and printed literacy. Both types of literacy have their upsides. Motoko Rich’s article “Literacy Debate: R U Really Reading?” reveals the controversy between online literacy and printed literacy. Despite the controversy, Rich explains how online literacy is a new way of reading.
Literacy enriches our lives in an outstanding manner. From a young age, we are eager to sit by our parent’s side and listen to bedtime stories. As our love for reading and writing grows, our wealth and thirst for knowledge does as well. The ability to entertain and enlighten our world through literacy is exponential.
Over time Americans have become less literate due to the experiences they have endured as well as the technology acquired through time. Technology has affected the American culture by aiding research, health care and even education. It may therefore come as no surprise that some people may find various technological advancements as negative since they require less human effort and thinking. Some may even argue that inventions such as the cell phone or even the internet have all aided in child obesity, lower grades, and lack of knowledge when it comes to learning the “old fashioned way”. When it comes down to literacy, it depends on which of the various definitions of literacy is used.
Today’s youth spend countless hours on the internet for various reasons. Whether it is for research purposes, indulging in social media, watching videos, or playing games, reading is involved in some shape or form. Regardless of the content, reading online gives children certain abilities, such as expanding their vocabulary, adapting to different wordings and writing styles, identifying errors, understanding the material, and identifying the importance of details/imagery in their writing, that they may or may not be getting from books. In “Literacy in Three Metaphors,” Sylvia Scribner tries to define and explain what literacy really is. Scribner says that literacy as a notion may be defined in many different ways, and I agree with this statement. She states that it depends on a particular society and certain standards of this society. Scribner offers the solution to the problem of defining literacy. This solution consists of examining and discussing the three metaphors: literacy as adaptation, literacy as power and literacy as a state of grace.
My relationship with literacy has been a journey all on its own. From learning how to sound out letters and words, to reading my first sentence , I have developed quite a valuable foundation and platform, that will eventually guide me to success. I have had the pleasure of experiencing a love that just continues to blossom. A love that will never fail, nor will I fail it. This love that I speak of is my passion for reading, writing and literacy as a whole.

My Journey to Literacy As kids we are taught literacy without knowing it. Our parents or teachers have sat down with us and helped us write out our letters, sound out words, and form sentences. We were all given crayons at restaurants and a piece of paper that had fun games, cartoons, and tic tac toe. There are few people who have not learned to read and write, or have learned in a different way or at an older age.
The layout shows the reader the development of literacy theories from Early Theories and Models Applicable to Reading through the 21st century. It was interesting to see some of the theories overlapping each other and some of the theories were developed upon by other scholars.
