The aim of this paper is to find out the reasons why and how it can be improved. Reading literacy is a ability which is the foundation of all processes of learning and it is necessary for learners not only to acquire languages and study literature but also to learn other subjects .If learners reading literacy level is low in most whys it automatically implies difficulties in obtaining of many other subjects, consequently obtaining education in general. There are many factors leading to a low rate of literacy levels in South Africa or the third world countries. Such as socio-economic conditions and political conditions plays a significant role for early achievements in reading South Africa. I wouldn’t be fixeded on the past in this essay. I be concentrating on all things positive and how we as future teachers or teachers can improve the literacy rate in South Africa by going through some concepts of increasing the reading ability of the learners. Before I start with the the above topic there’s a quote which was instilled in me by my stranded 4 English teacher about reading and it goes like this “I cannot remember the books I’ve read any more than the meals I have eaten; even so, they have made me.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson. So the question or questions a person or teacher must ask themselves is how can we improve the reading ability of ISP learners? I will look into few concepts that might improve the reading ability of a learner.
