What is courage? Is it something people are born with or is it something they learn. Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. Jem learned how to keep his head held high even in defeat, Scout stood up for Atticus in front of a mob of men wanting to hurt him and Tom Robinson, and they both learned courage from Boo Radley, who even though never wanted to leave his home, came out to help Jem and Scout from Mr. Ewell. So, in To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout and Jem learn about courage from Atticus, Mrs. Dubose, and Boo Radley.
In chapter 11, Jem learns that courage isn’t just in strength. After getting in trouble for wreaking Mrs. Dubose's flowers after she said rude things about Atticus, he had to read to her everyday. Mrs Dubose

As well as go into the home at the first place. Atticus told Jem something once he was finally done reading to Mrs. Dubose and she passed away.
““I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.”” (Lee

Cunningham and the other men confronting Atticus she still stood up in front of the men in order to protect her father. Luckily, Scout was able to remind Mr. Cunningham of the humanity inside of himself. Reminding him that Atticus was not just a lawyer he was also a man, a father. And so, Mr. Cunningham says to Scout ““I’ll tell you said hey, little lady,” he said. Then he straightened up and waved his big paw. “Let's clear out,” He called. “Let's get going, boys.” (Lee 154) This shows courage by how Scout reacts to the problem, by knowing that something bad was going to happen but stepping in anyways. Even though she might get hurt in the
Courage is a common occurrence everywhere in the world, especially back in the 1900s when colored people were thought to be different because of their skin color. In the book “ To kill a mockingbird” By Harper Lee, courage is shown all throughout the book, from Scout, a 8 year old girl, to Jem and Atticus, her brother and her father. Courage allows them to protect the ones they love, grow exponentially, and to stand up for what they believe is right. First of all, Jem demonstrates courage when Scout claims to have found a snake under her bed, she says “ I think there’s a snake under my bed, can you come look?”(Lee,185)
“It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare,” said Mark Twain. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird is a coming of age story about two young children, Jem and Scout Finch, growing up in Alabama in the 1930s and learning what real courage is through their father, Atticus, and the people of Maycomb. They learn to see the world from other points of view, which is also how they express empathy towards others, persevering and standing up for what you believe in, and putting yourself in danger to help others. One message that Harper Lee provides us with is that courage is when you persevere to do something even when it gets more difficult.
In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird Jem best exemplifies courage because he showed his fearlessness every time he saw someone else left defenseless. One of the times Jem showed courage is when talks to Atticus about staying and helping him get rid of the big group of drunk men at the county jail. The men are after a black man named Tom Robenson who is accused of rapeing a nineteen year white girl named Mayella Ewell.
“Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win” (Lee 76). Courage is the facing of a fear. Courage is pushing on until the obstacle is overcome, or the will to push ceases. Courage is not the absence of fear but the perseverance and bravery to face it, whether failure or victory is the predicted outcome. In Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird”, courage is correctly defined as knowing you’re defeated before you even try, but continuing on anyways (Lee).
One lesson in the book that I feel Jem learns as a part of growing up is moral courage. Atticus once told Jem that “courage is [not] a man with a gun in his hand. It 's when you know you 're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” Jem had always seen bravery as important and often tried to show the courage in him but only learnt about what moral courage really was through a series events that took place in the book.
To Kill a Mockingbird - Courage "Courage is when you know you 're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what" According to Atticus Finch, an honest lawyer in Harper Lee 's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. "Real courage" is when you fight for what is right regardless of whether you win or lose. Atticus fits into this definition of what "real courage" is and demonstrates it several times throughout the novel. "The only thing we 've got is a black man 's word against the Ewells '.
Jem had the conception that courage was a “manly man”, a man that was tough and could fight. However, using Ms. Dubose as an example, she explained a new type of courage to Jem. Ms. Dubose knew that her struggle was close to impossible to win, as many people failed to break addictions, yet she still tried to fight it, and winning at the end. The courage to do so was considered, by Atticus, real courage. This was also demonstrated by Liu Xiaobo.
According to Atticus, this is the ability to face adversity and go through with something honourable, even though you realize that it is impossible to win. There are quite a few characters in the book, which show some kind of courage, but there is one in particular, Atticus. Harper Lee made Atticus the hero of moral and a symbol of courage in her novel. He is the figurehead for all three kinds of courage I mentioned. For one he confronts a rabid dog, which displays physical courage.
In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout, Calpurnia, and Atticus stand out when courage comes to mind. These characters show courage in many unique ways with different situations. In the early 1930s, in the deep south, racial discrimination was a huge conflict, for example, the Jim Crows Laws were in play, and it legalized segregation between blacks and whites. Courage isn’t always shown in situations, but simply throughout growing up.
This type of courage means doing the right thing even when one has fears about the risk and consequences. When Jem was told by Atticus to go get his pants back from Dill, Jem decided to get his pants back from the Radley Place fence. Although Jem could wait until the next morning to get his pants, he was resolved to do the right thing in order to keep his relationship with Atticus the way it has been. His decision to return to the scene of the crime was courageous. Even after Scout’s reasonings and pleadings and (possible) fear of Mr. Radley he still went back to retrieve his pants so that he could keep things straight with
Atticus displayed courage by putting his life on the line and killing the rabies infected dog as well as standing up for Tim Robinson when no one else would. Like Atticus, Jem displayed a great amount of courage when he touched the Radley house and by defending Scout against Mr. Ewell. Scout showed courage by putting herself before a lynch mob ,in the process she saved both Atticus and Tom Robinson, as well as walking Boo Radley home .This instantaneous bravery that arises within a person in dangerous or threatening situations helps people step out of their comfort zones for the better. Courage is the ability to perform even if all your instincts are screaming for you not
The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines courage as the ability to do something that frightens one. Many characters in Harper Lee’s mid 20th century novel To Kill a Mockingbird display courage in numerous ways. One character however, jumps out. When first reading the book, most people would say that courage is displayed by those like Jem, Scout, Tom, or Atticus.
The definition of emotional courage is the ability to leave one's comfort zone or a sense of safety in an uncomfortable situation. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The character Scout shows a lot of emotional courage which leads to a better outcome When an individual struggles with an experience that they don't understand and/or comprehend which makes them confused or make them step out of their comfort zone, They often have to display a sorta of emotional courage so that the experience does not scar them. As a result, they can get through the experience and not let it affect their action and later thoughts. It can also end up helping them later on.

To conclude, the character Jem is the book To Kill A Mockingbird is faced with many coming of age events which connect to the theme courage through the literary devices used such as Jem’s internal conflict, Mrs. Dubose’s characterization, and lastly the foreshadowing of Atticus 's trial to defend a Negro. Although Jem gets very upset with Mrs. Dubose, he continued to return to tend her camellias until they were grown back out. He discovered what courage is but by having to fight the mental pain in his head known as internal conflict in order to continue to Mrs. Dubose’s house but at this point hasn’t discovered what true courage was. Secondly, Jem is blind to Mrs. Dubose’s characterization, by not knowing her struggle and assuming she was just a mean old lady. By Jem not fulling understanding Mrs. Dubose’s internal conflict, caused for him to learn what real courage when Atticus explained to him she wanted to be true to herself and die free from the drug morphine.
