There are many reasons as to why violence and abuse continue to occur. One reason may be the ineffectiveness of South African legislation to enforce laws and prosecute offenders. The inability to prevent violence against women has been supported by two separate reports, the Human Rights Watch (1997) report and the South African Police (2008) report (Burns, 2012). The latter indicated that there was a total of 52 617 cases of rape reported between April 2006 and March 2007, of which only 7% were successfully prosecuted (Burns, 2012). These figures blatantly indicate that the state has failed to protect women, moreover indicating that the prosecution of offenders has been ineffective. This, in turn, belittles the punishments towards offenders …show more content…
A fine line exists between neglect and abuse. However, different levels of violence against women and children are identifiable. It is important to categorise the type and other forms of abuse when intervening with abuse victims. This could range from physical, emotional, sexual and even non-contact abuse (Visser and Moleko, 2012). Some theories include that the enforcers themselves suffered abuse as children and therefore don’t necessarily see it as unacceptable behaviour. Others suggest that owing to mental illness, there are blurred lines concerning their intentions to hurt or harm the women or children in their lives. According to a recent study, statistics proved substance abuse by the perpetrator to be a major contributing factor to the prevalence of domestic violence in South Africa. It is important to note that this psychosocial issue suffers from under reporting by the victims owing to feelings of self-blame, embarrassment and fear of not being …show more content…
Because household violence against women and children is often viewed as a personal and private matter, the first step for intervention would be to create public awareness. When members of the community are made aware of the psychosocial problem that many of their members face, a platform for support and activism is created. Recognising men’s violence against women as a social problem has been paramount for the promotion of women’s rights. Three parties primarily involved in intervention include the police, the healthcare sector and the courts. When using these channels, victims may face secondary victimisation. This called for the victim-centered approach to be implemented in order to protect the rights of the affected persons. Parenting programmes are made available and have shown positive outcomes in the prevention and reduction of child abuse (Cluver et al., 2016). The rise of women’s movements has resulted in the government adjusting various legal policies in order to promote the protection of the rights of women and children. Economic upliftment plays a role in helping black- and underrepresented groups of women by improving their economic condition (employment) and socio-economic status. Media coverage has been a useful tool in contributing towards the women and children’s movement. Marches and
MARACs multi-agency conferences involve voluntary and statutory organisation agents who share information concerning adult with high risk of domestic violence, with the aim to increase the victim protection by making a coherent action planning (Robinson & Tregidga, 2005). Although, according to Robinson (2004) the incidences of domestic violence are lower in older people, however, the role of the MARAC is similar to that of the MASH, as providing a ground for information sharing and collaborative works (Pinkney, Penhale, Manthorpe, Perkins, Reid, & Hussein, S.
The incidence of child abuse and neglect has increased dramatically in the past 25 years; the statistics have risen over 130% since 1980 with 1993 being the first year since 1972 in which the number was less than the previous year. Throughout the years child abuse has had a greater impact on the United States and more thorough research has been brought out. The United States has one of the worst records among industrialized nations, losing more than four children on average every day to child abuse and neglect.(cite source) Among the many forms of child abuse are emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. Physical abuse has statistically been in the lead since the 1980’s at 45%, while emotional abuse has been at 22% and sexual abuse has been at
CPS 617 A: Assess.& Treatment of Child Abuse MeeSoo Lee Reaction Paper from chapter 1 to chapter 6 1. family abuse landscape “Abuse in the family” has been long in the history, however, it was not until the article called battered child syndrome (Kempe, et al., 1962) was appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association and started getting attention form professionals. “Only until 1974 has there been a consistent and planned systematic approach to partner violence” (James, 2008, p. 258). In the same year the National Organization for Women was founded, setting other organizations in place that re still around today, to help domestic violence. In 1994 The Violence Against Women Act was passed, this provided services and community support for women. The Violence Against Women act has been revised in 2000 and again in 2005. There were no shelters for women to go to in 1975, since then over 2000 shelters have been founded in 2002.
Furthermore, integrated responses are often focused on the short term, and need to develop greater cognizance of the need for ongoing support of victims, specifically in regards to housing arrangements. Meyer’s report also notes that the women who received housing arrangements believed they were “not sustainable in the long run”. A further barrier to the successful implementation of the integrated response model is the lack of diligence and effort it expends for ensuring the emotional protection and healing of female victims. If a women is permanently traumatised and scarred through an incidence of domestic violence, simply arresting and removing the offender will not suffice. The solution must be cognizant of the victims emotional needs.
As 2013 Statistics Canada reports, only about 24% of women – victims of abuse reported partner violence to the police (Statistics Canada 2013). There are many reason why women are not reporting abuse. I, in particular, remember myself hoping that it is temporary and the things will improve. Also, I felt guilty that I could not safe our relationship.

Children who are abused in their earlier years have a 59% higher chance of being arrested for a misdemeanor crime, and a 30% higher chance of being arrested for a violent crime as an adult, versus someone who had an non-abusive childhood. (Impact) Statistics like these are no longer shocking to the general population. Neglect is one of the most overlooked forms of abuse, but it is also the most prevalent. Many think that since it technically causes no physical damage like rape or assault, it’s not true abuse. Criminals prey on neglected children, ones who are looking for a place to belong, a place where they are given attention, even if it means putting themselves in danger.
One in 6 Australian women have been subjected to sexual abuse with a current or a previous partner(aihw,2018). Evidence in Australia indicates that there is a greater consequences for mental health for women who are sexually abused by their partner so more money has to be allocated for mental health services , as well as welfare support ( aihw,2018). Psychologically and domestic violence in Australia, there are long term mental health consequences for victims of domestic violence. Child abuse is defined as the physical, mental, sexual, or emotional harm of children on a regular basis underneath a parent/guardian’s supervision. In the United States of America alone, more than three million cases of child abuse are reported every single year; with child neglect and physical abuse being the most common forms. Child neglect is defined as continuously failing to provide for a child and their needs, while physical abuse is the physical harm of a child in actions such as punching.
