The Salem Witch Trials of 1692, a dark period in American history, resulted in the death of "two-hundred Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony" and the persecution of many more (Loock 528). This witchcraft crisis was sparked by religious intolerance and these wrongful actions were justified by the fact that they were purging the town of anything that went against their belief system. Frederick Douglass, a self-educated slave, could point out that people tend to fall back on religious belief in order to justify their cruel actions. The Salem Witch Trials prove that Douglass's assertion that men use religion to justify cruelty was not a new theory brought about by slavery. There becomes a point where people's morals become distorted and they …show more content…
Religion itself is not the issue, it is the people who interpret it falsely to gain political and cultural benefits that serve as the issue. On the news, it is common to hear about new plots and tragedy brought about by terrorists and their organizations. Terrorists take religious practice seriously. For when a nation or person threatens their religion, it could result in the death of innocent people and could possibly take their own lives in the act. One of the most recent incident of terrorism was toward a French magazine office that had published a satirical, yet controversial, image of Muhammad, which triggered a terrorist attack among the office in order to bring justice to the terrorist's god. Terrorism uses violence to solve their problems, which spreads panic over society. Using fear in order to gain power is a common method, but in terms of moral correctness, no religion can justify the murdering of large masses of people. Life is precious and religion, especially Christianity, emphasis how valuable life is. It takes a corrupt conscious for a person to believe that killing others will solve ones problems, just like it takes a corrupt conscious to believe it is right to justify enslaving a race of people and treating them
In 1692, A town in Massachusetts by the name of Salem Village became known for one most documented cases of mass hysteria in history. This saga started with three girls: Abigail Williams, Elizabeth Parris, and Ann Putnam a neighborhood friend. Abigail Williams, the niece of the town’s minister, began to display weird and questionable behavior. The town’s physician,William Greggs, was called to determine the cause of this sporadic behavior. The town’s physician determined that the three girls were under “the Devil’s influence” and they had been bewitched.
The Salem Witch Trials In March 1692, Rebecca Nurse, an elderly woman and respected member of Salem Village, was arrested on suspicion of witchcraft. She was accused based solely on the testimony of four young girls who claimed that the apparition of Rebecca Nurse had severely harmed them. Many witnesses testified in favor of her, but ultimately the "afflicted girls" prevailed. Nurse was executed on July 19, 1692.
Due to religion, lying, and health problems, it caused the Salem Witch Trial Hysteria of 1692 to occur. Religion was important to the Puritans in their daily life. They would take every word from God and turn them into action. Without religion in their life, then the Puritans would not have come to New England. Religion was an extensive impact on the repercussion of the Salem Witch Trial.
In the year of 1692, 130 people were persecuted in Salem, Massachusetts on claims of Witchery. 25 of them died. What could have happened in Salem to spark the infamous witch trials of Salem? I believe it was caused by paranoia, attention seekers, and unneighborly conflicts.
As their puzzled father ,Samuel Parris, observed the two mysterious little girls creep under chairs and spin around on the ground he pondered where this weird behavior was coming from. In Salem there were two little girls who were envious of the rich, so they made it clear that they could make people tremble in fear if they did not like you or wanted what you had. Everyone in Salem was terrified because there were so many people being accused of witchcraft. 22 people were hanged because the two little girls were pretending to be afflicted. The Salem witch trial Hysteria of 1692 was caused by two poor, young girls who claimed to be afflicted because of jealousy.
Many would assume that after the witch trials that occurred in Salem in 1692 people would be terrorized or cautious, but is that really what happened? Out of the almost two hundred people accused of witchcraft only "nineteen were hanged on Gallows Hill" (Brooks, 2011). After this gruesome event one would think that people would be disgusted by themselves for randomly blaming innocent people. The few who were pardoned continued their lives normally seemingly not caring about the ones who had passed away due to false accusations.
In Salem, Massachusetts, Puritans were strong believers in the Bible. The Bible states, “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.” The Puritans beliefs led to them accusing 20 innocent people of being a witch, this resulted in their deaths in 1692. Even though the Puritans couldn’t see it at the time, their accusations were really based off jealousy, lies, and Salem being divided into two parts. One cause of the Salem witch trial hysteria was jealousy.
In the winter of 1692,trouble began in the village of Salem in The Massachusetts Bay Colony. According to my research it explains,it started with nine year old Betty Parris started acting weird. She would hide under chairs, flap her arms and jerk around. She would also blabble saying words no one could understand.
There are always two sides of a story. The other reason religion is a threat to society is because of a political reason, people who become terrorists usually have a political reason for it. What’s makes religion difficult to understand today is that many terrorists kill
Imagine being a wealthy 45-year-old woman in 1692 being accused of being a witch. The Salem Witch trials were caused by jealousy, fear, and lying. People believed that the devil was real and that one of his tricks was to enter a normal person 's body and turn that person into a witch. This caused many deaths and became a serious problem in 1692. First of all, jealousy was one of the causes of the Salem witch trials.
The Salem witch trial was a time about accusing your fellow neighbor or being accused yourself, this all began in 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts. During this time many people were being accused of being a witch, a majority of the time it was because either someone truly believed that you were a witch and were reeking havoc or they were trying to find someone to take the blame if they were to being accused. So this leads us to question, what began the Salem Witch Trials? There were at least three causes of the Salem witch trials hysteria. These were Betty Parris and Abigail Williams story, Ergotism, and the acknowledgment of hysteria.
Nevertheless, whether terrorism has a religion or not is definitely not what I am here to write about. Discrimination in any shape or form should not be tolerated, it must be stopped. Islamophobia has severely increased discrimination in our world; likewise, biased views against not only Muslims but also non-Muslims are becoming a norm nowadays. You might ask how? Well, due to the unbelievable indoctrination of our people through social media and politics, anyone who looks like they are from the Middle East and has a beard, is a terrorist.
Many practicing Christians, at the time, believed that the Devil could persuade people to use the powers that he gave them to harm others. The Salem Witch Trials occurred because of resource struggles, many women were accused and tortured, and in the end the Governor realized that it was a big mistake. (“Salem Witch Trials”, 1). In 1689, English rulers William and Mary started a war with France in the American colonies which sent many refugees into the Essex County and Salem Village.
It is the everyday citizen’s job to notice terrorism and notify the authorities when it is being committed (“Prevention”). There are some strategies that only work for certain types of terrorism. When fighting religious terrorism, it is useful to talk to a religious leader and form a bond. A bond will help stop violence and instead bring about compromise. Treating a religious group as enemies will only cause them to retaliate.
Lots of people oppose generalizing this issue and criticizing a faith community for the actions of some individuals and groups. Many Muslims may refute the claims and oppose the misuse of Islam by terrorism, but their voice is not heard. We should seek the best instant and long-term resolutions to end terrorism and extremism. Meanwhile, we should fight the hate crimes and segregation, which is a major factor of radicalisation and a recruitment tool for terrorists. We should not live in fear, isolation and separation.
