Energy drinks are beverages that have a stimulating effect on the central nervous system and is mainly designed to give the consumer increased energy (Lucas, 2013). Many Manufacturers of energy drinks claim and promote that their drinks have beneficial effects on cognitive and mental performance. Currently, there is little evidence to support their claims that in fact energy drinks do enhance the cognitive performance of adolescents. (Pascal Wilhelm P1, 2013)
Marketing of energy drinks targeted at young people has been very effective. Besides from multivitamins, energy drinks are the most popular dietary supplement consumed by American young adults and teens. (National institutes of health, 2014) Males amid the ages of 18 and 34 years consume

(Pascal Wilhelm P1, 2013) The aim of this study was to investigate, through a series of tests, if the manufacturers of energy drinks are justified in promoting that their drinks improve the cognitive performance of adolescents. In a quasi-experimental design a number of adolescents (aged 15-18) were divided into 3 groups: an experimental group whose participants drank a currently available energy drink called Megaforce ,a control group, each of whose participants drank water beforehand and a placebo group whose participants drank a glass of sugar-free lemonade. (Pascal Wilhelm P1, 2013) Paper and pencil tests were administered to the participants of each of the 3 groups in order to measure learning ability, attention and concentration, verbal and numerical reasoning, memory, numerical aptitude and vocabulary. The results of the experiment showed that there were no significant differences between the groups that could solely be credited to the effect of the energy drink. The study concluded that given the many warnings about the potential health-risks of energy drinks and the fact that no evidence was found for beneficial effects of energy drinks on the cognitive performance of adolescents, it was also concluded that adolescents should avoid using energy drinks to enhance their mental performance. According to the American College Health Association’s National College Health Assessment the top 5 threats to academic performance among university students are anxiety, sleep disturbances, stress and depression. Energy drink consumption signifies developing health risk behaviour amongst students. The study that was conducted and published in the Journal investigated the relationships concerning energy drink consumption, academic performance and perceived stress amongst college students. (Michele L. Pettit, 2011) There were a total of 136 Participants of undergraduates who attend at large southern plains university. The questions the study was researching were the following: (a) Is there a relationship that exists between energy drink consumption and perceived stress amongst college students? and (b) is there a relationship that exists between academic performance and energy drink consumption amongst college students? Energy drinks have a lot of sugar, and Andres was a diabetic. Not monitoring how much sugar you intake can cause very high blood pressure and can lead to other serious problems. Not only did Andres not care and got highly addicted to these energy drinks, he didn't know that just because he was exercising and losing weight, these energy drinks made him have an irregular heart beat and that led to a tragic death. Energy drinks are the worst thing to drink before or during a workout. Your heart rate will ride intensely and can cause your heart to beat faster or even stop completely.
In conclusion, the ingredients in energy drinks can not be considered dangerous. Although reports have been made of seizures who have drank high volumes of energy drinks, there is no solid proof that it is because the
Since then, the trend of binge drinking has come along in American colleges. Henry Wechsler and Toben Nelson, writers of the article Will Increasing Alcohol Availability By Lowering the Minimum Legal Drinking Age Decrease Drinking and Related Consequences Among Youths maintains that, “College students are more likely to engage in heavy drinking than their peers who do not attend college, with 2 in 5 students nationally engaging in binge drinking on at least 1 occasion in the past 2 weeks” (987). Binge drinking is defined as the consumption of five of more drinks in a row
Minimum Legal Drinking Age Have you ever tried alcohol when you were under Minimum Legal Drinking Age? 77% of American population opposes a federal law that lowers the drinking age in all states to age 18. However, there are people who truly believe that MLDA should be lowered to 18.
Some might say that the use of alcohol is common place and nothing more than a stepping stone in the ritual of being a college student. The problem is the consequences of binge drinking and excessive drinking should not be accepted as “ritual” or common place. Some consequences are extremely problematic and not only impact the individual but have lasting consequences for the college environment in a global sense.
The article, “Bad mix for the teen brain,” by Janet Hopson, reviews many different surveys conducted by psychiatry researchers at various universities. Each survey tracked varying numbers of 12-14 year olds for a duration of time. These researchers found out that the teenage brain, particularly the prefrontal cortex, has not reached full maturity. The prefrontal cortex is just behind the forehead and controls the, “ability to stop oneself from acting impulsive…” (Hopson, 2013) The effects of drinking in young adolescents is very harmful to the brain.
Each day there were three games. Randomly the players took a powdered caffeine energy drink dissolved in 250mL of tap water to get 3 mg/kg of caffeine per kg, or the same drink with no caffeine content. Eight players with caffeine and eight players with placebo for each competition day. The placebo drink and energy drink looked identical and had similar taste. The beverages were in opaque plastic bottles, consumed one hour before the game.
ELECTRIC ENERGY DRINKS Teya Rampaul Grade 9H INTRODUCTION Energy drinks give us a quick burst of energy when we are feeling tired but which one gives us the most amount of energy? To find out which energy drink would give us the most I am going to test which energy drink has the highest voltage. One of the people I interviewed said that they would like to know which energy drink has the highest voltage. Another person that I questioned said that he doubted energy drinks had any voltage at all.
Coffee vs energy drinks, who will win? People drink coffee and energy drinks because they wake you up and they get you ready for the day. Most energy drinks hold 8.4 ounces. On the other hand, coffee has 8 ounces. On the healthier side, coffee only has 1 calorie for 8 ounces while energy drinks have 110 calories for 8.4 ounces.
Caffeine is a chemical found naturally in few plants all over the world. From these plants it is processed into its pure form and then put into other things such as soda, energy drinks, tea, and pills. Energy drinks and soda are some of the most widely marketed products in the world, even though they contain the highest concentration of caffeine outside of pure caffeine supplements. It is a stimulant that affects everyone in strange but semi predictable ways. Research has been done on this topic since the 1920’s and many different conclusions have been reached.
There are studies to prove that energy drinks cause, cardiac arrest, vomiting, migraines, type 2 diabetes and blood pressure. I also learned that there are even some companies that do not support energy drinks. For example in 2011, the American Academy of Pediatrics released a report on the appropriateness of sports and energy drinks for children, they concluded that "energy drinks pose potential health risks because of the stimulants they contain, and should never be consumed by children and adolescents. Also, in 2013, the American Medical Association adopted a policy supporting a ban on the marketing of energy drinks to those under 18, arguing that energy drinks could lead to a host of issues in young people, including heart problems. However, it is hard to me to understand why energy drink consumption has greatly increased in recent years.
With the constantly increasing paces of everyday life the search for an energy source, capable of boosting the human body to new limits by extending its endurance, continues. In the recent years a specific product, called an energy drink, has received much publicity worldwide. The energy drink is a highly caffeinated stimulant that is able to rise the performance of the human body. Many people consider it as a refreshment after a hard day’s work. What’s more one of the most frequently used cases of energy drinks is in combination with alcohol during parties.
In today 's society, if we appear to be exhausted, while knowing that we have to be on the run, we turn ourselves to energy drinks. Little do we know that every time we consume a single sip of an energy drink, we are literally creating a crucial complication towards our body. The innumerable quantities of caffeine and sugar that we devour stimulates each and every part of the body. Individuals have been replacing protein bars and other athletic beverages for real food (McCarthy). Becoming addicted to energy drinks relates to type 2 diabetes, even long-term effects such as heart issues, but most of all death.
The Danger Lurking in Your Kitchen Pantry In tenth grade, my biology teacher radically changed the way I ate with six simple words: high fructose corn syrup is bad. At first I brushed it off as one of the many stories that adults make up to scare children into eating their vegetables, but when my teacher went into the science behind his statement, I understood the powerful truth behind his words. High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a liquid sweetener made from corn and composed of the simple sugars fructose and glucose (White 1716S; vol. 88). Today, sugar makes up much of the average American’s diet, especially that of teenagers. Of all the sweeteners consumed, HFCS stands as one of the most common ("Why You Should Never Eat”).
Students worry more about getting ready and finding a way to school. It is rare that a person will take the time to wake up extra early just to get a meal in their diet before school. These things are often their last priority. Unfortunately, there is not time to eat because there is hardly even time to sleep every night and teens are not going to wake up any earlier just for food. “Insufficient sleep in teens has been linked to an increase in car accidents, substance abuse, suicide attempts, depression, even criminal activity” (NEA Today).
