Red Cross Club Essay Examples

In 2007, I, along with a few of my peers, founded the Little Lemon Drop Jr. Guild as a way to give back to our community. Since then, this nonprofit organization has raised thousands of dollars that has gone to support uncompensated care at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Throughout my middle school and high school years, I have been very involved with this group. When I had the opportunity to choose a service placement for this year, I immediately knew I would be doing my service through the Little Lemon Drop Jr. Guild because of my previous involvement with the guild and my passion for the cause the guild supports.

Although most students despise required community service, these little actions instill appreciation within ourselves and give back with a few little heroic deeds. Our service obligations allow us to learn about ourselves in context to the rest of the world, demanding us to see people from different circumstances, and help those less fortunate. Initiating and advocating change for students and the community without the expectation of being recognized is what has made me an HBCU All-Star. The moment I came to Nashville to attend the Illustrious Tennessee State University, I vowed to be an advocate for change and lead on and off campus. Countless hours and many sacrifices were made to ensure that my scholarship exemplified academic excellence. Extensive strategic planning and professional development was completed to ensure that my leadership was effective for my student body, local community, and the HBCU community at large. Kappa Gamma Pi is a prestigious honor society that only a select group of student’s quality to apply for membership. It is a great honor to be offered the opportunity to become a part of an honor society that has an emphasis on excellence in leadership. Throughout my college career at St Joseph’s College and within my daily life I strived to achieve excellence. Leadership is an essential skill one must obtain especially within my program of study, Child Study. A teacher acts as a role model, and guide for their students.

The community and legacy of Baird Scholars is one that focuses on excelling and improving, not only oneself, but the entire community as a whole. Looking forwards, I feel I could greatly contribute to the Baird community. Throughout high school, I always took challenging or advanced classes in order to push myself, and to expand my knowledge. I am an active member in our community. I volunteer every month, at least once a month. One of the organizations that I volunteer at is Spoonful of Hope. This organization dedicated to feeding those who were, and still are feeling the effects of hurricane Sandy. They also give food to those who are hungry and in need of a decent meal in our community.

I hope to bring diversity to all who walk on the campus. My background has shaped me into the intelligent African American woman I am today. Without growing up in the “hood”, I may have not been able to find the best career that interested me. I also would not have been able over all the challenges thrown at me. Instead I remained determined and motivated so that I was able to achieve all of the goals set before me.

Throughout my high school career, I was forced into many situations where I was challenged to connect with my peers and serve as a role model for future students. Whether it be my involvement in the school marching band, or helping students in community tutoring sessions, I have always made it my goal to better the people around me through my own efforts.
