Reflection
This Semester of English Comp was very helpful in learning how to use your writing to persuade audiences about social issues in the world. Not only from my own writing but from others as well I have learned new techniques and ways to make my writing more persuasive. I feel as though I know have a good handle on how to persuade readers that there is a probably, how to provide evidence that supports a solution for said problem, and how to make smart writing decisions.
Each of the essays we wrote this semester and even the PSA dealt with trying to persuade people in some way. For the first essay, we were just trying to persuade people of a problem. In my own writing process I persuaded my readers that there was a problem

First, I looked up differents solutions to whatever my problem was and compared those to the evidence I found about the problem. For example, in my essay of Prenatal and Postnatal care, I had to first explain why there was a problem. From that, I picked out some general issues like accessibility and depth. Next, I researched different solutions that were already in effect and found one that meets each area I saw that needed to be fixed. Lastly, I weaved in evidence and real life stories that would help appeal to my readers. This process was very helpful for me to use because it kept my thoughts organized and allowed me to stay on topic throughout my essay. I feel like I was able to really get my point across with how I approached my essays throughout this class in using this type of process, but also in making smart writing …show more content…
Some of the areas we had to make decisions on organization, style, and word choice. In my writing I chose to organize it first by explaining some background info on my topic, then explaining what the problem was within my topic, sometimes I proposed a solution for my problem, and finally ended with a counter argument and why my reasoning was still right. I feel like this type of organization worked the best for me and made my writing the most effective. As for style, I chose to keep my writing very formal, but in some spots, I added more personal stories of people that helped my writing appeal to readers emotions. This style choice was the best for me because it was able to keep my writing logical while also making it interesting to read. Lastly, the words I chose were also very important to my writing. In my writing, I used words that people would actually know the meaning of in order to appeal to a wide audience and I also used a lot of transition words to keep my writing
What I learned that certain events may occur and it will change your thought over something. The steps I had to take was to write a outline overview of what my essay was going to be like and think about the argument and claims I had to pick to support it and find quotes in the book that support my claims. We had to do timed essay about are theme of the essay were going to on. The way we wrote the essay was in TIED format because it would be easier to introduce the claim and back it up with evidence and finally discuss what it means. The leadership skill I used was to complete project effectively because I had to concentrate what I was writing about.
Those are different things, but of course what you should do is greatly determined by what’s true.” 7. What’s your idea? How are you speaking to the problem, question, or tension developing out of the primary essay’s idea or the conversation developing around their
In my argument essay, I tried to voice a strong opinion, but fell short. Although our process analysis essays and cover letters haven’t been graded yet, I believe that I portrayed a more confident tone and style in those than I did in my argument essay. While writing those particular essays, I focused more on meeting the requirements sufficiently and voicing my opinion effectively. I believe that gaining this kind of insight on essay-writing is a reflection of improvement in my writing skills and overall
How have I improved as a writer? I am thinking about my action plan as a writer have I improved, have I met the goals I set out to achieve on my first day of class, and what have I learned in this class? I will go over my time in this class and review the various topics I mentioned above and more. Looking back over my time in this class I will critique and praise myself. How I felt about writing when I first started this class compared to how I feel now, I would have to say I am more comfortable with writing.
The last form of writing is expressive writing, which is where the author writes about more personal things such as their feelings and experiences. The next question you should ask yourself when analyzing writing is who is the intended audience? The intended audience is important to know because many authors write their essays based on how the audience will react by structuring their writing a certain way and using specific words. The next question to answer is what is the thesis or main idea? Finding the thesis or main idea will reveal to you the author's main reason for writing the essay.
In my classical argumentation essay, I used several rhetorical strategies in order to make my essay more appealing and convincing towards my readers. In my essay, I used rhetorical appeals (ethos, logos, and pathos). I used logos by providing statistics on the amount of children that are not in school and the amount of children that are employed in places like India, Nigeria and Brazil. I then used pathos by providing facts on how children are placed in hazardous environments and their lack of education. I used ethos by providing the authors of the sources that I used, who are experts in their respective fields.
With this essay I did try new strategies for writing. I came up with a small outline of what I was going to speak about in each paragraph. Previously, I would write the paper from start to finish. I did not think about how I was going to arrange the paper before going into my writing.
Another bullet point that helped me out is to really know about my subject before I decide write a whole paper on it. Nobody can write a whole paper that makes sense on something they didn’t research or even put effort in trying to learn about it, and sometimes that's how I feel when I write papers for classes. After I turn a paper in I think to myself: Did I do enough research about this? , Did I tell them the main points or just the details? , Did I even tell them enough of the topic I researched?.
When writing an essay or article you need to be able to keep the audience’s attention. Keeping the reader’s attention through your essay is important because you want your reader to stay interested in the essay and not get bored and stop reading. In Roxane Gay’s “A Tale of Three Coming Out Stories”, she uses multiple techniques to keep her reader’s attention. When you are writing, use different techniques such as, emotion and examples/evidence to your argument.
Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be a challenge for me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to transition my thoughts from my mind to the paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of required writing ended up helping me in numerous ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me for college and real life by giving me a foundation of effective learning strategies.
The piece of writing which I felt was unsuccessful for me was the Rhetorical Analysis of an article relating to a topic from our course book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander. This piece of writing was difficult for me to organize my ideas around. The article that I decided to use for my rhetorical analysis highlighted mass incarceration among African American and the effect of civil liberties being are taken away from these individuals. I had a lot of repetition because many of the examples I used demonstrated more than one type of appeal. I found myself repeating what the purpose of the example was and how it demonstrated proper use of ethos, pathos, and logos.
So far I have learned that writing begins with strong ideas, which means brainstorming for strong examples, researching to figure out what topics I think or feel about would be of interest to the reader and myself. Therefore, I need to put those ideas on paper to see which makes the most sense, which is the most persuasive, and which topics I think will gather
Every student has their own writing process. Writing process ways is the student's way to have the best writing assignments and make who ever read it understand their main idea. In this essay I am going to explain my own writing process for various type. In chapter 4 by Keith Hjortshoj “How Good Writing Gets Written” which talks about how should develops their writing skills and gives them some tips that they should use in their writing process.
Throughout the term there has been many writing assignments —big or small— that helped reflect my writing process or the process itself. In the beginning of the course I felt like I was an “ok” writer, but lacked some skills such as: organization, sentence variety, and vocabulary. Also, I did not like to write and had a feeling of dislike when forced to write. I felt like I improved on everything I wanted and was seen throughout the semester. I know how to organize my ideas, the worksheets given in class to work on sentence variety really helped, and vocabulary was built on some level.
Writing has always been an issue but yet interesting subject of mine. As hard as I try and write essays, and papers I just can’t get the hang of writing. But after taking this class, I did learn different writing technique and improved my writing proficiency, material body of formatting, and how to uncovering and properly use sources. Through class exams, essays, and a research paper, I was able to learn new writing skills. Although I have learned a variety of things, my writing still needs improvement.
