Personal Narrative: Social Imagination

I along with my family moved to Canada in 2004, this was the biggest and happiest day of my life. I had great expectations for my future; since living in Pakistan, I understood that Canada was a land of opportunity. Unfortunately, due to the earthquake in Pakistan on October 8th , 2005, we had to move back to Pakistan since we had lost members of our family as well. The move back to Pakistan at that devastating time was very hard for myself and my family. My father enrolled me to a school in Pakistan since we were going to live there now. The school system in Pakistan just did not seem right anymore, I missed my school in Canada which I had attended for just a year. So the social norm that I broke I thought it was kind of funny. what I did was that I would walk around and taking people’s carts. I would grab the cart and say “well this is everything I need.”I went to Target instead of Walmart because I go there a lot so I don’t want to go back to target ever again anyways. Taking mine at I look like crap because I’m sick. So I thought of that should be up anyways. Some reactions I did not expect like them laughing at me. They would get really mad that I take there cart. One of the dudes got really mad and cuss me out. After that point I decided to leave the store because I don’t want to get kicked out.

C. Wright Mills played a very large role on society in the past, as well as now. He critiqued sociology, causing people to see it in a different way. Multiple things played a role in his reasoning for doing this and why it actually worked. His upbringing was one of the largest things that caused him to see sociology in this way and actually speak up about it. His many books and ideas, then impacted sociology by showing this new perspective that he had created. This opened people up to new ideas, therefore affecting society as a whole.

Sociological imagination can be defined as one’s awareness of the impact that society has on their personal life because of the outside conditions and circumstances. The outside world create standards for people, even if they do not know that they are being looked at in this way. Therefore, society influences a person’s behavior and limits their free will. This theory is clearly demonstrated in The Truman Show. The movie helps to deepen my understanding of sociological imagination and helps me to see how the outside world controls my life.

There are several things that happen in one’s life that shapes them into what they have become. These things can also change how someone may view the world around them. Experiences can be drastic changes such as moving to a new country or smaller, more common circumstances such as, growing up in a military family. Even if someone thinks that they haven’t had anything alter their life, they probably just haven’t took the time to reflect and realize that they have. My senior year of high school, I had the opportunity to take a five-day trip to New York City, New York. I had never been to New York or to any big city for that matter. I knew that I would see and experience a lot of new things in just five short days.

Society is a very intricate system that is governed by many factors that shape and develop the individuals within it. C.W theory the sociological imagination is carefully looked at and what it consists of is in this essay. The issues individual’s deal with such as personal problems and how they affect the wider society are discussed. The sociological imagination will be discussed its usefulness in concluding this essay.

In this essay I will be discussing the sociological imagination and the problems of families. The sociological imagination allows us to see the difference between personal problems and public issues and be able to link them. It basically allows a person to think outside of their personal perspectives and see beyond the outer appearance.

In C. Wright Mills’ 1959 The Sociological Imagination is all about how society sees things in their lives and how the make sense of it. Throughout the chapter Mills continues to point out that pretty much everything influences other things. It’s all about how the people view certain things in the world, what the make of it, and what’s going to happen next with a relatable situation. The basic idea that one needs to get from this reading is that Mills is analyzing change. How things happen and how people change their views, attitudes, actions, and what have you from a certain situation. Mills points out that there are a bunch of factors that can influence one’s change of thoughts and actions. That is; money, power, and the social aspect of things.

The term "Sociological Imagination" was introduced by C. Wright Mills in 1959. The definition of Sociological imagination from our textbook is “the ability to understand how your own past relates to that of other people, as well as to history in general and societal structures in particular”. In other words, Sociological Imagination is the ability to recognize that an individual's personal troubles are a product of public issues which aren’t always controlled by the individual. This concept can help to provide a better understanding about the current social problems our nation is facing. High school has impacted my life in so many ways. High School taught me so many things, from personal relationships to creating a relationship with my education. As a freshman, I made a huge amount of mistakes and I regret doing foolish things, but I’ve realized, I was only maturing into the young adult I am today. Freshman year, I was out of focus and I was only trying to find myself. I would also prioritize other things and ignore my parent’s advice, where they would tell me to focus in school and give it my full attention. Social imagination is the false creation of understanding of their social position and allow an individual to think broader from the everyday routine and construct of societies workings. It promotes a sense of awareness and possibility in an individual “gauge her own fate only by locating herself within her period, that she can know her own chances in life only by becoming aware” (Mills). From the time I was born, I was given certain characteristics and behaviors that follow through my life and creates a barrier for myself to have a limit on opportunities that could be taken. Every single person has a unique way of expressing their cultural identity because no one grew up exactly the same. I wouldn’t have my own identity if I didn’t carry morals and beliefs I had while growing up. I also gained characteristics that represent me from the society we live in today. Thinking of the daily tasks I partake in and how I do them in a certain way makes me wonder why I do it. Sociological imagination determines how individuals in society differ from one another based on their historical or social circumstances.
