When I was introduced to the Uopeople as a possible option to pursue my academic studies, I grabbed the opportunity. As I watched the endorsed videos from past and present students, I recognized the opportunity to network and be a part of a multicultural environment. Have I benefited from that diversity? The jury is still out with that verdict.

During my orientation process at UoPeople, I first recognized the different participant’s list from different countries. At that time I was a bit absent-minded on the “culture” aspect of the team. I did notice, however, that one of the admissions prerequisites is that students should be able to speak, read and write fluently in English; hence I took it for granted that communication would not be an issue (wishful thinking on my part). But, during, that time I had a misunderstanding with one student. It appeared that I was a bit insensitive towards his writing. His contribution to the discussion forum had a fifty-seven percent plagiarism level, and I was not quite sensitive with the way I pointed it out to him. Diversity provides a fundamental outlook on issues, our perception of events and the manner in which to solve things as well as sum up events around us or in the world. An (A +) strength of diversity I would admit. More importantly, diversity assists with self and situational expressions where it strengthens the value of members’ contribution (Grosse, 2002). There is, of course, a possibility for people from different backgrounds who work together. Occasionally there may be value conflicts especially as differences are the origin of miscommunication.
