Personal Reflection
My final semester at South Dakota State University has been a crazy journey and I gained some very valuable tools during my practicum experience at Head Start. While I was at Head Start, I couldn’t help but compare my experiences to those I had at the campus preschool. As the final section of my portfolio and completion of NAEYC standard 7, I have reflected on the differences and similarities between my two major student teaching experiences.
The first similarity I recognized right away is the sharing of the classroom environment. Head Start had two different classrooms that were shared with three different classes and the preschool classrooms are generally shared between two different classes. The first week I was at Head Start I had the chance to observe the classroom routine and get to know the children, and I quickly realized the

This was a relief, because I was very familiar with the Early Learning standards and I was concerned about having to become accustomed to something completely different. One more similarity I noticed between by two student teaching placements was the emphasis and importance of parent communication and involvement.
During my time student teaching there were also some very clear difference between South and Head Start. The biggest difference is that Head Start is federally funded and the families are not required to pay tuition for their child or any additional services that may be provided, including meals or transportation to and from school. When I student taught at the SDSU preschool many of children were transported back and forth by there parents or another family member, only two children in the classroom I was in were transported back and forth by a parent or
I have facilitated the development of program plans of study, in fulfillment of Perkin’s requirements, and currently working on program pathways. We are revising our course offerings and sequencing through a SREB audit completed last year. Suggested program changes and new program implementations are being evaluated against Pierce and King County Workforce data and job growth projections. Staff certifications, trainings and curriculum development needs are currently being assessed for implementation. Using state and national professional teaching standards and assessments I have provided support for teachers through assistance programs, and professional development.
Key Stakeholders Children are key stakeholders in the Head Start Program. The Head Start program helps children in several ways. For example, children learn their basics in education; children also learn socialization skills by interacting with other children within his/her own age group (Castro, Bryant, Peisner-Feinberg & Skinner, 2004). The Head Start Program fosters a set of values to support the overall goal of improving social competence within the family unit and its environment. Single parents are also key stakeholders in the Head Start Program, because they utilize the program to meet child care needs and their children’s educational needs.
The college's commitment to hands-on learning and fieldwork will provide me with invaluable practical experiences in real classrooms, allowing me to apply the knowledge and skills I gain throughout my coursework. I anticipate the chance to work directly with diverse student populations, and to make a positive impact on their lives. Additionally, Pacific Oaks' emphasis on community engagement and advocacy will enable me to develop a deeper understanding of what my educational goals are. I am eagerly anticipating the transformative journey that lies ahead and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children through my studies at Pacific Oaks. Being able to access lectures and coursework from the comfort of my own home has allowed me to save time on commuting and adhere to a personalized schedule.
Every day we develop better lesson plans, assessments and behavior plans and stronger instructional practices, we are helping to build a better world. Every day we take extra time to unlock the key to success for a student with our continuous improvement plans, our safe rides on our school busses, fixing an air conditioner, coach teachers and leaders and hiring the best and brightest, we are building a better world. We will celebrate our ten schools receiving an A or B letter grade. We had seven schools receive a C and three schools in the D range. We can discuss how some of our schools struggled to find highly effective teachers in certain areas or how some of our schools did not show the needed grow because they didn’t have a strong enough focus on standards based instruction.
Janet acknowledges the children of Head Start are in difficult situations in which they are poor or they are referrals from child protective services. The positive short term effects that Head Start offers is a lasting influence on the child’s future. The fact in which Head Start is still operating after 50 years is an indicator of an evolving quality preschool. I agree with most of the article, however, I do not feel as though this article provides the Head Start Program with justice.
Fuller and Strath (2001) conducted a quantitative research study that examined local populations of early education organizations based on the 1990 household census data to report features of the early childhood workforce nationwide. Multiple economic and regulatory forces shaped the population of early education organizations that operated within states and local communities. The median center-based teacher was 34 years of age, reported having completed some college, and was married. The median family childcare home provider had a high school diploma. Fifteen percent of all preschool teachers in urban areas were African American and 8% were Latina.
In an early years setting their a variety of different children that have certain needs that need to be met in order for them to be healthy, safe, secure and welcomed into the setting. Therefore if a child had a problem which led to them being in need of a wheelchair constantly while in the setting. Then their needs would have to be met in a variety of ways for example someone needing to push the child to get around the nursery correctly, having support to complete tasks, someone holding the doors open to allow the child to join in outdoor activities and finally helping the child to get ready into the correct wear for example if they need a coat on to go outside. Although when doing activities for example outdoor play and learning how to catch and throw the ball over the parachute.

This job really taught me about the importance of children having a routine to follow as well as the impact teachers can have on a child’s life. After my first year in college, I realized that I wanted to gain more experience with children of all ages. Shortly after,
It all begin some three years ago when I enrolled in Ashford University to help me provide the best I can to all the families I serve. In two weeks after this one, I will be receiving my Bachelor in Early Childhood Education. I have gained the knowledge and skills to help support my expectation of all the families I serve. I would like to continue learning need techniques that will be helpful in maintaining the skills I need for the future.
One of the unique aspects of the Department of Child Development and Family Relations is that many of the department’s large core courses offer teaching assistant opportunities to undergraduate students. Teaching assistant opportunities are valuable for undergraduate students to decide whether to apply as a graduate teaching position, great addition to a resume, and for a letter of recommendation. From my teaching assistant experience, I was able to fully grasp the concepts of middle childhood development, form a new appreciation for professors and teaching assistants, and reflect on myself as a student. In addition, I had the opportunity to strengthen several essential skills such as organizational skills, leadership skills, and communication
In the program, we have initiated to what I consider the “second phase” of 2nd year field placement. The process came by really quick, in which to a moment I felt unprepared. It is amazing to think how quick time is flying. It is simultaneously exciting but nerve-racking. This semester has been a really tough one.
