Character is the moral qualities of someone. It is what defines somebody as a “good” or a “bad” person. When someone has good character, they are generally seen as kind and hard-working, not putting themselves above others. A person with good character has the ability to influence others simply because it is difficult not to respect that kind of person. For example, a kind and hard-working player on the basketball team will gain the respect of his teammates. Because he has their respect, he will be able lead his team where he wants it to go. Because I am part of both groups, I am able to see two different kinds of people, and it is very interesting. Not many people have this opportunity, as most are not involved in both athletics and fine arts. I can see that the athletes see themselves as more important than the members of the band or choir. They look down upon the music department, seeing themselves as “too cool” for it. In contrast, the band and choir members see the athletes as jerks because they feel hostility. I, being a part of both groups, am completely neutral and favor neither group more. Instead, I aim to prove the opposite of how each group sees the other. I try to show the athletes that their sports are no more important than band and choir, and I try to show the musicians that not all athletes are jerks. I have done this in multiple ways. When I was a sophomore, I was playing varsity football. During our last home game, I had an interception and two touchdowns. However, despite my success, I saw myself as no more important than the musicians in the marching band. Because of this, I played with the marching band, fully padded, at halftime. This showed my teammates that athletics are no greater than fine arts. Also, it showed my fellow band members that although I was a successful athlete, I saw myself as equal with them. I believe that I demonstrated good character through these ways,
