Studying human behavior, motivation, and our basic forms of the learning process are some of the most fascinating aspects of psychology covered thus far in this course. Becoming familiar with the works of the notable scientists that have performed experiments, studies, and research to further our understanding of how and why organisms learn, all have become subjects that I have enjoyed studying. An area of study on particular are theories of inherited primal behaviors known as instinct and reflex that have served to be the rudimental motivation of survival. Another subject is the behaviors of how we respond, receive, or react being an effect of the association of the information gathered through basic processes of learning. Three such processes are classical, operant conditioning, and observational learning in which association plays a key role. After taking into account physiological motivation, associated and social learning; I can attempt to understand the complexity of conscious and subconscious thought during the learning process. When all information is correlated, organisms have been able to adapt to their environment and continue to thrive. Summary: Chapter 2 Chapter two dives into the concept of learning. As mentioned in the previous chapter, learning is the study of changes in behavior produced by experience, so when studying learning it is vital to examine how events in the environment change an individual’s behavior. Many scientists consider learning to be a natural phenomenon, they make their case based on four assumptions. The first assumption being that natural phenomena’s do not just happen, but instead they are caused as the result of some other event. The second assumption is that causes precede effects.
The main aim of this essay is to compare and contrast two of the most enlightening theorists that have added a different perspective to the study of personality in the realm of psychology. The paper aims to expound on the two theories by firstly drawing comparison and then elucidating the disparity between the Behaviorist approach by Burrhup Frederic Skinner and the social learning approach to the study of personality by Albert Bandura. The two theorists at first will be explained separately in order to provide a general understand of the two different approaches . However it is important to first start by defining what is meant by the theories of personality.
Assessment Tool: Hand Hygiene (Behaviorist theory) The skill chosen for evaluation is based on hand hygiene specifically the social hand wash technique. The technique was based on the WHO guidelines from which the assessment tool was developed. The theory used to develop the assessment tool is the behaviorist theory of learning and teaching focusing on Pavlov and Skinner’s theories.
Social Learning Theory is different from the Behaviourist Theory as it recognises the significance of cognition, as we are not submissive learners. Cognition includes mental processes used to help us make choices in what we do. We learn through: observation, modelling and indirect and direct reinforcement. Bandura believed that vicarious positive reinforcement is the most common reason for behavior modelling. A strength is that it is less deterministic than the behaviorist approach and can account for cultural differences in behaviour.
Given the broad areas of interest falling under the purview of biological psychology, it will probably come as no surprise that individuals from all sorts of backgrounds are involved in this research, including biologists, medical professionals, physiologists, and chemists. Indeed, Tolman stated, “I believe that everything important in psychology can be investigated in essence through the continued experimental and theoretical analysis of the determiners of rat behavior at a choice-point in a maze.” Behaviorism dominated experimental psychology for several decades, and its influence can still be felt today. Given that any behavior is, at its roots, biological, some areas of psychology take on aspects of a natural science like biology. Reflecting the diversity of the field of psychology itself, members, affiliate members, and associate members span the spectrum from students to doctoral-level psychologists, and come from a variety of places including educational settings, criminal justice, hospitals, the armed forces, and industry.
Chapter three deals with procedures based in the principles of “respondent conditioning”, also known as Classical or Pavlovian conditioning. Classical conditioning is different than “operant conditioning”, in which a behavior is modified through its consequences, known as a reinforcer or punisher. These behaviors are called operant behaviors or voluntary. However, this chapter focuses on “respondent behavior”.
Throughout this book, we can see examples of operant conditioning. This type of conditioning includes reinforcing behavior with some sort of action. Operant conditioning usually occurs in early childhood -prior to middle childhood- but can also happen later in life (Belsky, 11). This is present in multiple areas of the text. One of the first examples of operant conditioning that can be seen is when Robert is learning to swim.

INTRODUCTION Have you ever thought on how people explain about behaviour? How do we know when learning process has occurred? Learning is permanent change that happened in the way of your behaviour acts, arises from experience one’s had gone through. This kind of learning and experience are beneficial for us to adapt with new environment or surrounding (Surbhi, 2018). The most simple form of learning is conditioning which is divided into two categories which are operant conditioning and classical conditioning.
Looking at Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, there are five primary needs which emphasizes on human motivation (Poduska, 1992). The physiological needs or basic needs are at the lowest level of the hierarchy. These needs must be satisfied in order for individuals to survive. It is then followed by the safety or security needs where individuals seek for protection and stability. When these needs are satisfied, individuals are motivated to fulfill the next level of needs which is the love and belongingness needs.

Maslow was looking to explain the motivation behind people’s actions. He developed his theory to represent the needs people need to meet to be comfortable in their living situations. Based on Maslow’s theory, phycologists can determine why people partake in the actions they do. For example, people who do not feel belonging and love as children are more likely to join gangs or other organizations to gain a sense of belonging.
