Reflecting upon my past four years as a student at the University of Manitoba, there have been maybe instances in which concepts that I have learnt in the classroom have benefitted my everyday life. This course has significantly influenced my daily life, from encouraging open minded decisions to using theories as reference points for my volunteer work, ultimately, I have seen amazing results in my progress as a leader and hope to see progress in my future endeavors. The outcomes I envision for myself at the end of this academic year are confidence and efficiency in my leadership understanding. In the future, I hope to go into a teaching profession. Rather than denying specific theories, I instead allow myself to be open and think about the potential outcomes. In doing this, it allows for progress in a way in which I never thought would be possible. This way of thinking is moving me to do what I am currently doing. As well as keeping an open mind, I am motivated by the Path-Goal Theory perspective. This theory states that leaders accomplish their goals through examining the worthwhile payoffs that occur based on their performance of work achieved (Northouse, 2016). In knowing that I will have satisfaction reaching my goal, it allows me to stay motivated and persevere, especially in times where challenges arise. Through the increase of payoffs; both the amount and the types, I become motivated to move forward. By specifying my goal through the Path-Goal Leadership Theory, I form a clear path while ignoring or resolving obstacles allowing me to reach my goal. For example, while volunteering, my goal with one student was to get her to enjoy the water. I was forced to brainstorm a path to get her to feel comfortable in the water, such as by linking positive situations with the water, while avoiding obstacles, such as other students splashing her and scaring her to hopefully obtain the goal, leading to success. This is an ongoing cycle in which I act as a leader to my followers and I am also a follower to those above me who I gain knowledge from. In regards to support; encouragement and words of wisdom have always been positive reinforcements for me. To hear affirmative statements of strength from acquaintances, friends and family, allows me to feel fulfilled as though I have accomplished an important achievement. Reflecting is a way in which I support myself, in doing this assignment it has allowed me to think and rethink what I am doing, why I am doing it and ways I can improve with new strategies I have learnt. Therefore, I need the positive support of myself through reflection and I need the support of others through encouragement, positive knowledge and persistence to allow me to better understand the concepts of
