I attended an AA meeting with the Promises Group at St. Michaels Church, at 5pm on February 6th, 2017. There were around 30 individuals at this group; 25 males and 5 females. There was one individual, that had to get his paper signed; however, he stayed for the whole meeting and shared his story. A judge had ordered him to come to AA meeting due to getting many DUIs. This individual said he was very happy that he is a part of this AA group, and that they have become like his family. During this meeting, there was one female, who ran the whole meeting, she started the meeting with stating what this AA meetings will include, and then asked two individuals to read a few passages from their book that they had called promise. The last individual discussed how he’s been clean and sober for eight years now. He talked about how difficult it has been, as his addiction to alcohol was one of the hardest things he has gone through. He talked about how he always reflection on his past experiences. He thinks about what if he hung out with a better crowed, or what if he moved to a different state. He said if he moved to Florida, he may have never hung out with the wrong crowd, and then many have never got addicted to alcohol. He them went on to say, even though he made some poor decision, it all led to him being at this AA meeting. He is thankful for these AA meeting because this group of individuals have become like his family, and they have helped him get through a lot of things. At one of his first meetings, this AA group told him that he was addicted to alcohol, and he is so thankful for that because he “thought he was going crazy.” Lastly, he said that his addiction has taught him a lot of things. It teaches him new things every day; even though he has been sober for eight years. He reflected on his past behaviors, and learned that he was using alcohol to mask his anxiety that he
Time went on and Louie continued to have flashbacks of the past. Alcoholism soon took over his life, enabling him to forget about the chaos happening in his life. Drinking became a hobby for Louie, a necessary reliability to live through a difficult day. However, reality set in and Louie realized that alcohol did not resolve his problems, therefore he turned to God for help.
Writer said that J.C can be comfortable to speak about any issues or concerns with her and that she would not judge him. J.C seemed preoccupied with other thoughts and kept changing the subject to speak about biblical aspects but writer prompted him to stay on topic. J.C admitted that he felt that he could not resist R.S and admitted that in the past there had been a lot of instances where R.S would invite J.C to drink on property either around the forest line or in R.S 's room. Writer encouraged J.C to think about all the positives about remaining sober and asked if he would feel comfortable using those in the future when these circumstances arose. J.C said that he would and explained that sober living has positively impacted his life and feels that without alcohol he can accomplish many things such as moving out on his own and obtaining a full time job.
As he does this, he mentions the importance of alcohol and its role that it plays in his daily life and interactions with these individuals. The second part, Augusten describes his life after rehab and the challenges he starts to face. To starts, there is Greer, who is Augusten’s partner at work
In the story “Under the Influence,” Scott Russell Sanders. He tell you in detail about his father’s excessive abuse of alcohol, and the transformation that transpired. However, as he grown older he realized his father didn’t only have impact his mother, his sister and his brother, but also how it is affected his own relationship with his own children as well. He describe his father’s alcoholism problem while growing up barbaric and dark. Since he realize the neglection he felt during those times of his childhood.
Throughout my whole life, my father has been an alcoholic. There have been times when he has tried to quit, but it never lasted for more than a few months. His addiction has brought on stressful times for my family. Some days we did not know where he was or if he was coming home. Although my father’s addiction might not have made the best childhood, he did show me the kind of person I did not want to be.
I chose this particular group because it was an open meeting and they welcomed anyone. The man running the group, was a member himself, and was very welcoming. The meeting started with the AA promise and 12 steps, which I believe they start every meeting with. There was not one specific topic focused
My initial perception of the members in the room is that some members may be shy to disclose their stories, but was amazed that everyone came forth in the room to discuss their shortcoming. Furthermore, I did not have any stereotypes perception about alcoholism since I am aware that alcoholism is a disease that affects the brain. My understanding about alcoholism was confirmed by the various client verbalization of their stories and problems associated with
Nathalie Diaz’s poems “How to Go to Dinner with a Brother on Drug” and “ My Brother at 3 A.M” point out how drug and alcohol abuse cause stress and problems over a family. Diaz explains the struggle that her family has to be through because of her brother addiction. Diaz’s poems show her life and the struggle she needs to experience such as drug addiction, violence, and poverty. The brother addiction to the Meth causes the family fall in part.
Losing a battle to illness is devastating and utterly heartbreaking. With addiction, it is quite often that people fail and fall into their old habits. Others simply don’t want to be sober. In How to Help Someone with an Opioid Addiction, published by the Chicago Sun Times, the author lists ways for friends and family members to assist in the process of sobriety. But, what if it doesn’t work?
It seemed like a fun place to be while also being helpful in maintaining sobriety. I think one of the most influential things I learned from the meetings is that everybody can struggle from addictions and you would never know it. There are people from all different walks of life that have an addiction problem. Someone can have everything in their life and still be unhappy and turn to their addictions or they can struggle and have those addictions. I learned that it is a constant struggle for people.
Sanders reveals how his father’s alcoholism has not only corrupted their family, but how it has also carried on to affecting his own children as well. Through this essay, Sanders allowed us to see the development of his understanding of alcoholism from his childhood perspective to his current perspective as an adult at age 42. Due a lack of understanding about “alcoholism,” Sanders suffered emotionally from being unable to recognize his father’s addiction, which made him feel remorseful for not being to clear his father’s disappointments.
“The Man Into Whose Yard You Should Not Hit Your Ball,” Serves as a powerful representation of the nature and impacts of addiction on those close to and even peripheral to the addict. Lux uses the characters states and actions to show this. The narrative of this poem tells how a man mows his yard despite the season, the events happening, or what’s in his yard. The tone that overwhelms this poem compares the mans need to cut his grass is to addiction and the consequences that are a cause of it.
Feet thudded agaist the pavment, carrying their owner faster than they ever had before. Their veins pummped fear through the body like water threw pipes. The bodys lungs struggled to hold in breath, crying out for it every moment. Muscles ached ang groned in agony, threatening to give way at any moment. The running man discovered it was true what they say, adrenilin makes the world seem clear.
Tears streamed down my face as I took one last look at my childhood home. It was a bittersweet moment. I had been longing to move to California for months, but it was not until that moment had I realized how much I would miss Georgia. When I finally stepped into the car, my heart felt like it was shattering into pieces. I would be leaving behind a good life, one full of loving friends and neighbors, in replacement of moving across the country to a place that I had never before seen.
