I participated in a service learning activity through Fayetteville State University’s Ethics and Civic Engagement HB-1 class. I immensely enjoyed the experience and the impact I made on the recycling effort in the New Science and Technology building. The goal of the class was to expose students to environmental and sustainability issues. FSU mission on sustainability is “FSU signed the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) now known as Carbon Commitment in April 2010. It is a high-visibility effort to address global climate disruption and institutional commitments to eliminate net greenhouse gas emissions from campus operations, and to promote the research and educational efforts to equip society to re-stabilize the earth’s …show more content…
I did not see the same recycling urgency from other students. Many times, I have seen students throwing away plastic bottles in the trash, even though the recycling bin was right next to the trash bin. Also, I have always been passionate about the environment and its impact on my daily life, however I did not know that the environmental issues and the carry capacity of the planet is rapidly declining at its current rate. The service learning project had several different responsibilities student could sign up for, our class was responsible for bagging, post sort weighting, data collection and the clean up team. I chose to be on the post-sort weight team and I had three other teammates. Our responsibilities as the post-sort weighting team was to “weight separately the sorted bags of trash and recycling, then report the weight by categories to the data collection team.” Before participating in the service learning project, I did not know my teammates; Jermaine, Takoiyah and Dante. This was the first time all of us had interacted with each other, the service learning project was something none of us had participated in
For my service leaning assignment, I volunteered at the Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival in support of the Montgomery County Food Bank receiving donations at the festival entrance. In volunteering at the event, I learned the differences in service learning, volunteerism and community service and will provide details in what I learned a about each. I will also provide details and examples of teamwork, communication and networking experiences gained while at the event. A brief overview of the Montgomery County Food bank will also be provided with information on the assignment task, measurable success and interaction with fellow students and organization directors.
This project was a lot harder then my family and I ever expected it to be. At first we thought it would be good and we would feel better about not wasting and not having as much trash. But after a couple of days we noticed that we couldn’t do a lot of things we normally do like wipe our hands on a napkin or use a straw to drink at a resturaunt. We as a whole had to make a lot of changes like making our foods the night before and bringing clean towels with us everywhere we went. This project has really made us open our eyes to see what we were actually doing to hurt our environment just by going through our daily routine.
The value of service-learning is based on two main dimensions, which are normative and pedagogical effectiveness. The focus of this study is on the pedagogical effectiveness dimension and how service-learning provides unique experiences and situations where the students must adapt, which is the “essence of the impact or active ingredient” for learning in this format (8). Service-learning encourages students to obtain more responsibility and are given more opportunities to view education as an “evolving process” instead of an “end product” (8). Through reflection, students develop and challenge their skills of critical thinking and connects them to a common goal with the community that promotes their “affective, civic, social, and cognitive development” (8). Proponents say there are many advantages for this type of learning including: allowing students to become participants instead of passive “sponges,” and expanding the limits of the classroom to the outside world allowing students to participate in the community.
Students whose beliefs do not align or have prior obligations may be disproportionally impacted by this requirement, which has the potential to limit their ability to succeed at Liberty University. [Respected Authorities, History/Precedent, Guilt] The concept of Christian Service centers positivity and servanthood. As Christians, it is important to put the teachings of Christ into practice. However, there are alternative ways to engage in service and contribute to society.
The Ethical Warrior is a concept that us as Marines try to be by our core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. We are taught these by are Drill Instructors as soon as we stepped on those yellow footprints at boot camp and started our journey as Marines. We see the ethical warrior who instills these values in their daily life. Can our enemies be ethical warriors, I believe this to be true.
The school describes social change to be “something that we just talk about rather, it is who we are” (Walden University, 2015, Social Change section, para. 2). Ultimately, the school’s goal is to encourage students to be active agents of social change and to inculcate in them the desire to bring forth positive impact within their community through the actions that they choose to engage. In our world where the level of violence, inequality, and poverty is disturbingly high and climbing steadily, I believe that people who were educated about the value of making a positive impact to the lives of other people will be of great help in battling these prominent global issues. The collaborative efforts of educators who share a common goal of improving the lives of the people of the future by providing their students equal opportunities to learn, as well as relevant, engaging, and highly cognitive learning experiences that will ready them for their careers will certainly make a difference. Since day one and until now, I have constantly been reminded of my role of an educator of the 21st century.
Integrity is being honest and doing the right thing even when no one is looking. Don Galer’s quote, “Integrity is what we do, what we say, and what we say we do” shows that integrity is affected by strong moral principles and what we do with those. The role of National Honor Society is to celebrate the students who have kept up their integrity throughout their high school career and to keep them on that same path. Integrity is an important aspect in education today because there are so many opportunities to cheat on a multitude of assignments but the students who stay away from cheating will be better off in the long run. For example, while I have been in high school there have been many times that I could have cheated like reading the spark
This taught me that I can make an impact not only by physically minimizing pollution but also by getting other people to willingly reduce pollution too. I completed this project through San Antonio Parks and Recreation. I created four activities, which will be introduced to multiple groups of children at different times. These activities influence children to treasure the Earth, and the plants and animals that live here with us. The first activity consists of teaching kids what pollution is and what part of the environment different types of pollution effect.
A liberal education is the main goal of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh through the University Studies Program (USP), which allows students to become educated in all areas of study, ultimately preparing them for all the challenges and experiences life can have. Sustainability and the environment are two very important issues on campus, and because of that central focus, there are countless ways the efforts of the University are visible. After only being on campus for three weeks, I have learned countless things about myself as well as my education, and I have already seen remarkable efforts to preserve the environment all across campus, particularly in Sage Hall. The conversations from class have solidified my choice in choosing to attend
A large part of the driving force behind my interest in both Catawba’s environmental degrees and the Environmental Stewards Program is frustration. All too often it seems like people don’t stop to consider the impact their actions can make on the surrounding environment. Well water in neighborhoods similar to my own is poisoned by new developments that spray chemicals in order to obtain the “perfect lawn,” power companies bulldoze entire areas of forests along creeks and rivers with no regard for the destruction of those waterways and the species that depend on them, and those same new developments I’ve mentioned inevitably doom themselves by increasing severe flooding. My goal is to research and raise awareness about issues while helping the
If art and literature, mathematics, science, economics, statistics, history and religion is taught, why not teach the fundamental importance of ecological conservation? “Students are like sponges and observe information well if they learn about it starting at their early childhood education and throughout their school years. They should be aware of the importance of recycling, and therefore I strongly believe each school district should implement into their lesson plans a lesson of recycling in order for the students to begin recycling themselves” (Permalink). Molding children’s mind to be conscious about the importance of environment

What? Over the past semester, I have taken part in a service learning placement to better understand the diversity that occurs within the Hamilton community, where I will be doing various clinical placements in subsequent years in my nursing program. My particular placement was at an elementary school, Pauline Johnson Elementary School, where I spend three hours every week with a second-grade class. In my role as a service learner, I acted as a teacher 's assistant. During class time, I would go around and help various students with their work, encourage students to try their best, supervise during nutrition breaks and interact with students during music and gym classes.
Our service project showed us how we could better the environments around us. Like I said previously, God gave us the Earth as a gift and he left us in charge of his perfect creation. As Christians, it is our duty to
As children, we were taught by our parents that it is wrong to lie, cheat, and steal. As we grow up and enter into the real world with some knowledge of right and wrong, we see, first hand, the importance of ethics as well as its complexity. The role of ethics in our society and in an individual’s life is very necessary because it has a large influence on today, as well as the future. We need to learn about good ethics because they guide our decisions, make us who we are, and determine our future.
