Reflection On Intercultural Communication

Before enrolling in the class, I was unaware of what intercultural communication was and what theories applied to my culture, values, and beliefs. During the first two weeks of the course, I learned that intercultural communication is the symbolic exchange process whereby individuals from two (or more) different cultural communities attempt to negotiate shared meanings in an interactive situation within an embedded societal system (Ting-Toomey & Chung, 2012). Single-parent system, small power distance, feminine culture, and personal identity have all impacted my culture, beliefs, and values.

According to Ting-Toomey and Chung (2012), feminine culture pertains to societies in which social gender roles are fluid and can overlap. Growing up in a household full of women (my mother, grandmother, and aunt), allowed me to realize that whatever a man can do, a woman can do. To be organized, I stay on top of day-to-day tasks with a planner, reminders, and making sure that my area is clean. Since my junior year of high school, I have taken Advanced Placement English and Journalism courses that have honed my writing skills. As a communicator, I find it easy to put my thoughts into words. I am good with conversations and presentations. With my personality, I can connect, and I am accepting of others. I notice those who feel left out and make an effort to include them. With focus, I can take a direction, follow through, and make the corrections that are necessary to stay on track. As a scholar, I have a great desire to learn and want to continuously improve.
