I want to start about by saying I enjoyed the My Virtual Child program. There is nothing I disliked about it When I learned we would be doing this program for the class I was very excited! It was everything I thought it would be. I say this because it was more so hands on and it connected my readings in the book to what might be going on with an actual child in real life. The program touched on what would happen to a child mentally and not just physically. We learn a lot on how child develop in class but don’t really touch on how everything around them can affect them in a big way. For example, in the program I separated from my spouse for a while. Observing Mckenzie of five weeks and listening to Michelle talk about her was actually interesting. Throughout the course of the Virtual Child assignment I learned about how different parenting styles can affect children. I decided before raising my child that I wanted to mimic my parent’s style that they had used. I am an only child and my parents were strict and demanding, yet that taught me how to be determined and responsible. On January 25, 2016 at 8:34 AM I gave birth to my virtual child Amelia (Manis, 2008). My spouse and I chose the name Amelia based on the strong characteristics of Amelia Earhart.

During this developmental interview, I chose to conduct an observation/interview study with my one of my cousin’s child. This child is a 4 year old girl and will be identified as “child K” in relation to her first name. Her parents had no problem letting me interview her, but I had them stay in the same room as us. The purpose of this interview was to observe the child’s physical, cognitive, and socioemotional development. I observed her behavior and gave her several tests to show how well she has progressed.
I have been enjoying being a part of this program and i plan to do it when i get older. Right now we have a 6 month old and a 7 month old. I love meeting all of these children and watching them learn and grow. This is a experience that i will hold dear to my heart for the rest of my life.
Upon completing A Child Called “It” by Dave Pelzer for a second time, I am completely convinced becoming an educator is my purpose in life. The first time I read this book was in middle school and although the book did stir up a lot of my emotions and was a difficult read, it does not compare to the effect it had on me as I read it for a second time as an older woman. Dave Pelzer wrote a memoir that highlighted the horrific abuse he received from his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother, all while living with his father, siblings, and attending school. The book expresses the torturous, unpredictable games his mother would play with him. These games took a physical, emotional, and mental toll on Dave’s life and this is all evident through his description of the abuse and his desire to no longer live.
Part D: Development as a Psychologist This internal practical internship offered me an opportunity to focus on using the knowledge and skills acquired during the related courses on behavior training with children and cognitive behavior therapy with adolescents to practice my therapeutic work as a child and adolescent psychologist and a chance to see how psychological therapies (behavior training and cognitive behavior therapy) could be delivered in different settings. At first, I found it challenging to work independently and decide what to do and when to do it. Reassessing the children was interesting. Some children scored much higher than they did at the beginning of the school year, but some children went backwards. I had a hard time understanding why children would go backwards in understanding rhyming after we have been talking about it during this unit. If I would have done this nursery rhyme unit differently, I would have made sure I was taking a quick formal assessment after each lesson. I needed to see on paper their understanding or lack there of.
