Reflection On My Writing

reflecting on my progress thus far in this course, I have not only become cognizant of my writing skills and habits, but improvements I need to make to become a better writer. Although writing has never been one of my strong suits, I have learned valuable writing skills and strategies that are applicable to both the professional and academic field.
Transitioning from the way I have been taught to write as a high school student has been the most challenging and influential change I have witnessed in my writing. To elaborate, in high school, we were taught the basis for writing any essay regardless of the audience or topic was the rigid five-paragraph essay structure. Through the Reader Expectation Theory assignment, which involved reading and writing about the theory, I learned how to properly write an essay and the importance of tailoring any piece of work to your audience. This approach differed from my previous method of writing. One of my strength that I continue to build as a writer is the ability to spend a significant amount of time revising a writing assignment. I have learned the importance of receiving feedback on any writing piece. For example, after going to office hours to receive feedback on the Reader Expectation Theory assignment, I had a better understanding of the theory and how to integrate it into the paper. It is important as a writer to revise your work and receive feedback because often times when we write, we tend to miss key details that should be edited. Although I tend to get bogged down on guidelines and parameters of writing assignments, this has developed into a strength.
