I first heard about Qualitative Research in the research methodology class that I attended during my first semester at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). Qualitative research is a type of research method used to explore issues at hand, understand subject matter, and answer research questions by analyzing unstructured data received from target participants.
From what I understood in class, qualitative research is about finding out not just what people think, but why they think it. It is about getting people to voice their opinions in order that others can understand their motivations, feelings, and experiences regarding the subject matter. Qualitative research was one of the subjects to be taken, as well as quantitative research. Qualitative research is a core subject for all PhD students of the University. The teaching method used by the lecturer was by way of class discussion, whereby students were responsible for driving the discussion. Well, since I had already grasped in my mind the basic concept of qualitative research from last semester, on the first day of the second semester lesson I sat in class with confidence that I knew what qualitative research is all about. It is actually much more than that. Qualitative research aims to get a better understanding of issues through firsthand experiences, truthful reporting, and noting down quotations of actual conversations. It aims to understand how participants derive meaning from their surroundings, and how this meaning influences their behaviour. After going through the reading materials, I embarked on attempting to understand a few jargon words that stood out, such as ontology, epistemology, reflexivity, and methodology. “Wow! Introduction The prevention of patient-to-patient assault in an inpatient psychiatric unit is essential for the safety of patients and staff (Perez, 2014). The aim of this quantitative pilot study is to decrease patient-on-patient assaults which, in the long run, may improve patient safety during hospitalization (Staggs, 2015). Discuss the standards used in critiquing qualitative studies: descriptive vividness, methodological congruence, analytical and interpretative preciseness, philosophical or theoretical connectedness, and heuristic relevance. Qualitative studies are critiqued using five general standards (“Critiquing qualitative research,” 2018). Descriptive vividness examines the inclusion of all the necessary descriptive data, such as the experience of collecting it, the thoughts of the research team as they did so, the site of the collections, and the participants. It should allow the reader to feel personally involved in the event. Methodological congruence ensures that the researcher took the appropriate measures to accurately record and represent the data, both procedurally and ethically.
Qualitative Critical Appraisal In this paper, I will be performing a qualitative critical appraisal on the article called Expanding the scope of research with transition-age foster youth: applications of the social network perspective written by Jennifer Blakeslee. I will also come to a conclusion on whether or not I agree with the findings and if I believe it is useful in practice. Method Blakeslee (2012) uses social network analysis in an inductive, exploratory, qualitative research design for this study. Qualitative Research is primarily analytical research. It provides understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. It gives insights into the problem or helps to change ideas. The typical approach used is county-level panel data in this type of study to estimate several linear crime calculations along with how many people are gun owners. Looking at this type of information provides data, from across countries, states, and metropolitan areas, which seems to provide statistically significant associations.
A cross-sectional qualitative study using purposive sampling to select children of differing ages was conducted. One researcher with a history in qualitative studies interviewed the 32 children participating in the study. The researcher held practice interviews with a colleague with experience interviewing children. When possible children were interviewed in their home, although 3 of the children were interviewed in a hospital setting. Interviews lasted between 17 and 90 minutes.
The class was broken down into two sections that day, the first half of the class was instruction on glucometers and blood sugars and the second half of the class was a test review for an upcoming exam. At the focus group meeting, which consisted of three cath lab nurses and six charge nurses, recommendations and suggestions for improving the SBAR communication form were discussed and voted on for approval by a show of hands. Using the focus group's recommendations, I created a revised and updated hand-off tool to be used hospital-wide for all nurses to use on every patient. The focus group reviewed the finished form and after full acceptance it was submitted to the director for approval. After reviewing, the director stated he was pleased with the end product, and declared it would be submitted to the hospital committee for affirmation. Approximately two weeks later, the director informed me that the committee was delighted with the updated hand-off form and that it was being forwarded to the next department for endorsement.
3. QUALITATIVE RESEARCH THEORY 3.1 QUALITATIVE RESEARCH Qualitative research is a form of research in which the researcher collects and interprets data, meaning the researcher is as important in the research process as the participants and the data they provide. Reason and Rowan (2004) have argued that the core element of a qualitative research approach is to connect meanings to the experiences of respondents and their lives. According to Clissett (2008) qualitative research involves a variety of research methods that can be used to explore human experience, perceptions, motivations and behaviours. Qualitative research is characterised by collection and analysis of words in the form of speech or writing.
It is primarily a subject oriented approach. In other words, the applicability of methods is mostly focused on the subject. Using qualitative research methodology, the researcher strives to comprehend the broad spectrum. The focus is on analysing the large volumes of data in a scientific and empirical way. This analysis relies on a particular case study, journals, online surveys and others.
