Teaching and Learning Reflection Project (TLRP)
Inquiry: Talks by Eric Mazur, August 22 & 23
On the 22nd to 23rd August, at NUS-Yale College Center for Teaching and Learning , Eric Mazur gave his sharing on his teaching reflections.
Investigation: Peer Instruction
Eric Mazur is a well known physicist at Harvard University who is also a leader in science education. In the early '90s he developed an instructional approach to teaching called peer instruction. In 1997, he published a book on the subject called Peer Instruction: A User 's Manual. Others later supported the seemingly common-sensical idea that student engagement worked, such as Richard Hake in his 1998 report entitled Interactive-engagement versus traditional methods: A six-thousand-student

We can help them learn, and learn at a higher level, with more confidence.
As these interactive techniques may be new to many students, it is important to motivate them to participate in Peer Instruction from the very beginning of the course. We can encourage our students to participate in interactive learning by explaining the method at the beginning of the module. Also, during the peer discussion phase of Peer Instruction, we can make sure we direct students to discuss their answers with another student who has a different answer. This helps moves students into richer conversations about their reasoning and can facilitate resolution of dissonance.
At the end of the day, all good teaching takes time and energy. With Peer Instruction, as with lecturing, there is a lot of preparation required at the beginning. Then, subsequent times through, we would expect lesser preparation with either technique.
Peer Instruction is my favorite pedagogy because it is so flexible. We do not have to radically transform our teaching to implement it. As Mazur says, “one of the great things about Peer Instruction is that it is easily adaptable to your own needs, your own environment, and your own teaching philosophy: So if you want to start small, try doing one question, every class
In math gives students a chance to share different methods and angles for solving mathmatical equations. In english, students can analyse characters from different points of view. In every class, students will learn to work together efficiently to gather and organize ideas. Sadly, some students believe "it is a waste of time listening to peers compared to listening to teachers.
A course such as this one is a source of collegiality; an atmosphere where students are able to collaborate, share ideas, and further one another’s understanding. This class not only encourages frequent discussion, but implements into the daily routine, allowing students to speak, listen, and learn. The Human Event promotes discussion, providing students with the opportunity to cultivate their own ideas into words and communicate these original interpretations clearly and effectively. This opportunity doesn’t just benefit the speaker, but also the listeners. When new ideas are shared, the group as a whole can advance their understanding.
English 102 through the Alabama Early College Program has taught me the importance of writing skills. When I first began online classes for English, I quickly started learning techniques that I needed to keep up throughout the semester. Each assignment and essay is due at midnight, therefore starting or finishing an assignment early allows the writer enough time to turn in the assignment. Throughout the five modules, I have learned how to write an argument and rhetorical analysis, conduct research and write an exploratory essay. In each module, I learned writing techniques and skills that I never knew before.
Kenneth Bruffee’s “The Art of Collaborative Learning: Making the Most of Knowledgeable Peers” discusses the importance of autonomous collaborative learning in classrooms, that is, when multiple individuals work together, and constructively criticize and exchange ideas in order to produce a fruitful product. With autonomy, the instructor fades into the background to allow the students to govern their learning, which circumvents the traditional view of the instructor’s authority in the classroom. Collaborative learning is being integrated into numerous fields of study, as teaching institutions are realizing that students learn best socially. A key idea discussed in the reading is that learning occurs when knowledge is passed between individuals, by which learning and acquisition of knowledge are both social processes. The author
The article, “Never Say Anything a Kid Can Say,” by Steven C. Reinhart that was published in 2000 was quite an interesting read. Throughout this article, the author explained a teaching technique that he thought was the most effective for students to learn the most. He explained that it was a process; it wasn’t a technique that could be implemented and accomplished within a few days. The main idea of this philosophy was to have the students do the explaining and the teacher do the listening, which is completely opposite of the normal classroom setting.
I came into my first college writing class feeling prepared thanks to you and your investment in me as a student in your AP Lang class. I developed as a writer more than I ever had in your class, and it definitely helped me in my college writing class this semester. I already knew how important it was to revise and continuously critically think about my writing, as well as the importance of multiple drafts and peer review. My English 110 class this semester was very similar to yours because we also did multiple drafts where I could revise my paper as many times as needed. The big difference was that the focus was on different genres and how to appeal to those, which was something new compared to my high school English courses.
This semester has been an ongoing challenge for me but has been an enjoyable one and I have not been presented with any impossible tasks. I have never been much of a writer, and during the course of this semester, I 've struggled to meet length requirements on the assigned essays. However, I do understand that not everyone is an excellent writer or even has to enjoy writing to get a good grade in this 1A class. From the start, with the first essay, I pushed myself to do my best and looked to multiple outlets to polish my writing, such as the online tutor, the writing center, the internet and the writer 's handbook.
Coteaching is a partnership between the general education and special education teacher, which is designed to enhance the learning of students with disabilities. Coteaching is built on a foundation of collaboration and differentiated instruction, so that every student can succeed in the classroom. In the video The Power of 2 by Marilyn Friend we are introduced to instructional approaches, such as alternative teaching and parallel teaching. These strategies can utilize the skills of both professionals and help clarify key concepts. In addition, the video presents us with strategies that should be used less frequently, such as one teach one observe which can limit the effectiveness of coteaching.
Cooperative learning model is an active process where students work in small teams/groups, each with students of different levels of ability, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject. Students have opportunities to actively participate in their learning, question and challenge each other, share and discuss their ideas, and adopt their learning. Ross and Smyth (1995) describe successful cooperative learning tasks as intellectually demanding, creative, open-ended, and involve higher order thinking tasks. In this model, it is essential to create a positive climate where interpersonal skills can be promoted so that positive emotions will be fostered among learners. Cooperative learning also helps the learners to feel empowered and respected to prepare them to face real
If a group of students during a session have all come in for the same reason (review session, help with a worksheet, assistance with a post-lab, etc.), we should allow the students to help each other. This provides help for the students who need it and gives other students the opportunity to teach what they know, further solidifying what they have learned, as well as "allow[s] students to learn collaboratively with peers, while being guided by a peer leader" (Jebanesan 2016). This would have a similar framework to the chemistry department's Peer-Led Team Learning, except that there is a looser structure, and the coaches would be slightly less involved. This might look like students peer-editing each other's lab reports or reviewing course content in preparation for an exam. Another way this is beneficial is because the students are often in the same class, so they can teach the others the way the professor taught it in class, whereas the coaches might not be able to remember how their professor taught it to them, or if they did not have the same professor, how they want the student to know certain concepts.
During the course of this semester, I feel that I have grown substantially as a writer. I think that I could improve even more with practice as well as using a few resources. This class has helped me drastically by improving my writing structure but I think it could have been even better if I had spent my time more efficiently. Overall this class has been very beneficial to me and I think it will really help me in the future. When I started this class I took a completely different approach to writing a paper.
My journey in this English 3001 course during the past ten weeks, and over the course of taking is English class I have grown and learned more that I thought it is necessary for me to know as a student. I have improved in my overall writing skills because if you look at my second in-class essay and the rest of my essay you will see that I have made progress and improvement compare to my diagnostic essay and the first in-class essay. Moreover, now that I have completed the English course my skills are better that I am capable to meet the university standard writing requirements. This English course additionally taught me how powerful the composed word and language can be. This quarter my ability to compose essays and express my thoughts, ideas,
This interaction encourages students to think. It is very beneficial if the students interact between them in a large number since everyone has their own experienced, opinion, ways of thinking and so forth. In computing,
(1995) conducted a study about Collaborative Learning Enhances Critical Thinking, The idea of Collaborative learning in, the gathering and blending of Students with the end goal of accomplishing a scholastic objective, has been generally inquired about and pushed all through the expert writing. The expression "Collaborative learning" refers to a guideline technique in which Students at different execution levels cooperate in little groupings toward a shared objective. The students are in charge of each other 's learning and also on their own. Along these lines, the achievement of one Student causes different Students to be
Being a teacher is a journey that has much to do with learning about yourself and being aware that what happens in your classroom reflects only on how are you with yourself. Teachers are not conscious that they project into students, and that affects how things go in the classroom. I believe the first characteristic of a good teacher is that he/ she is always willing to analyze his/her teaching performance. Second the teacher is humble enough to receive input about the development and application of techniques, learning from it and improving.
