Inquiry: Talks by Eric Mazur, August 22 & 23
On the 22nd to 23rd August, at NUS-Yale College Center for Teaching and Learning , Eric Mazur gave his sharing on his teaching reflections.
Investigation: Peer Instruction
Eric Mazur is a well known physicist at Harvard University who is also a leader in science education. In the early '90s he developed an instructional approach to teaching called peer instruction. In 1997, he published a book on the subject called Peer Instruction: A User 's Manual. Others later supported the seemingly common-sensical idea that student engagement worked, such as Richard Hake in his 1998 report entitled Interactive-engagement versus traditional methods: A six-thousand-student …show more content…

We can help them learn, and learn at a higher level, with more confidence.
As these interactive techniques may be new to many students, it is important to motivate them to participate in Peer Instruction from the very beginning of the course. We can encourage our students to participate in interactive learning by explaining the method at the beginning of the module. Also, during the peer discussion phase of Peer Instruction, we can make sure we direct students to discuss their answers with another student who has a different answer. This helps moves students into richer conversations about their reasoning and can facilitate resolution of dissonance.
At the end of the day, all good teaching takes time and energy. With Peer Instruction, as with lecturing, there is a lot of preparation required at the beginning. Then, subsequent times through, we would expect lesser preparation with either technique.
Peer Instruction is my favorite pedagogy because it is so flexible. We do not have to radically transform our teaching to implement it.
