Reflective Essay: To Be A Good Leader

Based on your experience, what can you tell us about leadership?
I believe that being a good leader means doing the right thing with enthusiasm, consideration, and vision. In other words, being a “mensch.” My first experience of being a leader was at Jewish summer camp, when I was selected to lead a team for the camp’s annual color war. While I was initially dumbfounded at the decision, I slowly learned that my counselors saw me as someone who has a lot energy and passion, and someone who cares about being moral and having an impact on others. With the new knowledge that I was capable of being a leader, I became the vice president of my school’s debate club, the co-president of the business club, and founded my school’s Coding Club. From my experience leading these clubs, I have learned that leadership requires courage, initiative, and a desire to help others. That being said, the most important thing that I have learned thus far in my journey as a leader is that I still have a lot to learn about being a leader. I try to continually learn about my shortcomings and strengths everyday, and I truly believe that every moment is an opportunity for growth.

Above all, I want to be a part of the Masa-GLI Leadership Accelerator to become a better leader and a better version of myself. To me, this means being exposed to new ideas, having my own opinions and perspectives challenged, and pushing myself to becoming a more confident and thoughtful person.
