Before taking this religion course, religion has been just a word that at quick glance seems very easy to define, but with further investigation, requires more thoughtful exploration. The term, religion, is very hard to define. One of the reasons why it is hard to define is because there are many different religions throughout the entire world which results in numerous different scenarios that we must consider when trying to define religion. Another reason why it is hard to define is that each religion is different from one another. Each religion is unique in its own ways such as its beliefs and practices. The beliefs or practices of one religion can conflict with another religion. I think it is very difficult to try to define religion because we do not want to offend someone else’s religion with our definitions of religion. Due to these reasons, defining religion is a real issue in our society today. People especially scholars are scared to define religion because they fear they don’t know about every religion in the world. Also, it is hard to come up with a definition that can satisfy all the religions in the entire world. In general, people fear what they do not know about including myself. For instance, people get scared or nervous before an exam, especially the first exam of a class. Religion tries to describe the types of things that we don’t really know much about. People are either too scared or careless to listen to other people’s views about their

When people are filled with fear, they are unable to think and process properly. This causes them to be fast to accuse those who are different, who they don’t understand. People’s ability to empathize and listen quickly goes down the drain, making it even easier to demonize those who seem odd. One example of this is when Giles turned in his wife for reading, She was quickly accused of witchcraft because the only thing that was acceptable to be read by her was the bible. This misunderstanding cost two people their lives.
Religion. It’s a beautiful thing right? The different ideas, beliefs, and perspectives on things. But religion has a power so scarily strong. Religion can impact a whole country for the best or the worst.
Religion often times is depicted as a specific institution that follows the teaching of the Bible, Torah, or the Quran. People fail to realize that religion can stand as anything for any particular person depending on their values. These values bring about sacred symbols, object, or systems to
During a time period that was present around 400 years ago, many colonists sought religious and economic freedom and decided to break away from the British government to form an independent nation. This area they inhabited is now called, the United States. In this time of great change, the colonists had to completely formulate a new government. Since one of the major motives for breaking off of Britain was for freedom of religion, it ended up becoming a good base for the building up of a new government. Religion gave many advantages to the growth of government through unifying the people, establishing power, and constructing order.
Ideas about religion began to rapidly change from the mid-sixteenth century to the late-eighteenth century. The Protestant Reformation began to challenge the longstanding ideas of the Catholic Church, creating numerous sects of Christianity in the process. In Spain, the Inquisition controlled religious thought and persecuted those who believed differently. For quite some time, religion was controlled and monitored, as it was unacceptable to share a religious view that did not coincide with the majority. However, war, social thought, and change in laws generated an increase in religious toleration.
Religions are beliefs and every belief has a story. A religion is a particular system of belief, faith, and worship. An example of a religion is Islam, a religion where the followers, Muslims, believe in only one God, Allah. Muhammad was the messenger for this religion. Muhammad was a prophet who was sent to confirm the Islamic belief, addressed by previous prophets.
Religion has created and resolved many conflicts in civilizations. Throughout world history, religion has played a huge role of different societies due to the conflict that it can cause in cities, countries and even full continents. As time goes by, maturity within each religion progresses. Each religion has become more forgiving with their rules and guidelines which is a drastic difference to how it used to be when old countries used religions to unite and decide government rulers. Religion is a crucial part of civilizations, it can have many different positive and negative effects on the way countries move on.

Fundamentalism, which in religion is taking literal the text of a holy book, affects childhood in various negatives (and positive) ways. It leaves critical thinking skills underdeveloped and causes many children to be afraid of punishment or judgment if they detract from the religion. In addition, many children are kept isolated and have to learn social skills, and how to enjoy things their peers have already discovered. In the few positive ways it affects people in the religion, fundamentalism can teach discipline and regard for rules. Fundamentalism leaves little room for questions, which are regarded as heretical or a sign of disbelief.
Religious Experience Reflecting on one’s religious experiences growing up can be a rigorous task but can also provide a self-reflection if the one reflecting looks at the events in a non-bias manner. I grew up in a non-structured home when it came to religion. My first experiences of religion came from my Dad’s stepdad. He owned a farm out in Bolton and when I was little I would go to the farm on the weekends and assist them on the farm and maybe see my cousins while I was there.
