I was called “too emotional” so many times last year that affected me a lot in ways I did not expect to happen. I did not understand it is meaning and neither the bad side of it. I choose this book because looking at last year feedback I understand that I am emotional and it hard for people to understand what I say. So, I want to explore this part of me which makes me human and I want to find a way to communicate effectively.
The main points of the book are referring to the components of emotional intelligence, anatomy of the brain, emotional intelligence vs. IQ, emotions in marital life and teaching emotional intelligence. The author did not make a clear difference between consciousness and thought. But, he underlines the fact that some people are more into the emotional side of the brain than into the thought processing one and these people should listen to themselves and pursue a career in poetry, songwriting, art. These professions are richer in emotional content. I do not fully agree. Emotional intelligence can be learned like other skills a human being have or can develop. So, there are many factors which tells a person what career to choose, like what makes them happy. their priorities, what are their values and who they want to be. It refers to being able to handle feelings as appropriate. The author explains that you can manage your feelings by changing the focus. For example, if you are in a depressive state you should focus your attention on some positive activities and you should avoid terrible movies or stories that can drag your mood down. Also, self-efficacy can help, which is the belief you have mastery over your life’s events and you can meet challenges as they come. Developing a competency can strengthens this sense of self-efficacy. What I think it will help me a lot is motivating myself. I found in the book that I can use emotions in the service of a goal. Goleman underlines the importance of emotional traits such as persistence and enthusiasm. He also writes that for Asian families academic results are important. In order to have good grades they have to study long and hard and they have this belief that hard work will improve results which is basically a principle of growth
The novel Unmasking the Face by Paul Ekman and Wallace V. Friesen was very interesting. It provided information on how to read six different emotions on the face. The book served as a guide to help understand emotions that people portray on their face. The guide focused on six main emotions: surprise, fear, disgust, anger, happiness, and sadness. In addition to all of emotions it explained the different types of signals that can appear on the face.

Poet Dana Gioias should be taught in college because his poems provide readers with traditional poetic techniques such as rhyme, blank verse, and fixed form,while still providing poems that offer intriguing,relevant themes in today's society. El Jones: The importance of spoken word poetry Spoken word poetry is a medium used to spread the concerns of generally disadvantaged groups in a non-structured widely received form. Many civil rights speeches use this style of poetry due to the ability it has to reach such a vast audience within a limited time and on poor finances. El Jones uses this style of poetry in her work to create a message that can reach a broad audience of varying social classes. In El Jones "I know what you see," there is an allusion to many political and economic troubles present to residents living within Halifax's Africville.
‘For What It’s Worth’ by Buffalo Springfield has a logical message because it is referring to the Sunset Strip Riots that took place in Hollywood during the 1960’s. People protested when they lost their civil rights due to a curfew law that was put into place. The song says, “Stop, children, what’s that sound. Everybody look- what’s going down?”
Emily Dickinson is considered one of the most influential American poets of all time. However, she was not always perceived in this light. Dickinson dropped out of school as a teenager and lived a reclusive life on her family farm until her death in 1886. She chose this lifestyle due to her fragile emotional state that was caused from her unfortunate romantic relationships (“Emily Dickinson”). During this time, it seemed she learned perseverance and how to cope with troublesome, despairing times through her poetry.

This might be a sign of lacking awareness of problem. Emotional intelligence refers to a person’s abilities to perceive, identify, understand, and successfully manage emotions in self and others. Being emotionally intelligent means being able to effectively manage ourself and our relationships. A leader need a high degree of emotional intelligence to regulate their emotions and motivate others.
