Before the class was assigned this reading, the first thing that comes to mind when I hear the words graphic design was aesthetics; I thought graphic design was as simple as making a piece aesthetically pleasing to catch the attention of the demographic an advertisement is geared towards to. Reading through the article made me realize that graphic design employs more concepts beyond aesthetics. I learned that while a design of course should be pleasing to the eye, it also must communicate its message to the receiver of the message effectively. However, from the perspective of a girl in her late teens, I will probably be swayed more by products that effectively promise fair, glowing, and beautiful skin. In another example, Raissa Robles’ publication, Marcos Martial Law: Never Again, aims to educate and remind the public of the atrocities the Marcos regime had committed against the Filipino people. However, not all people sees the appeal of reason, so using graphic design to appeal to people’s emotions must be used to catch the attention of potential buyers of the book. The cover employs dark shades of red, which is associated with bloodshed, danger, and anger. The cover also includes barbed wires in its design, which usually evokes the feeling of being restricted, censored or imprisoned, reminding us of the multitudes of Filipinos who spoke against the regime, who were captured and kept as prisoners. To me, it’s about the message being conveyed, and how effective it is being conveyed. An average person normally wouldn’t think of who created the signboard that directs them to the next bathroom, train terminal, or restaurant; they’ll be more concerned with how to get there, and they need clear messages that tells them how to get there. To me, in the world of graphic design, no matter how great or famous an artist I could become, if I can’t convey my message properly in a design, then it is
