REFLECTIVE JOURNAL Introduction MDJ 4432 Community Service Project introduce me to involve in volunteerism. It is individual’s freewill and not an obligation stipulated by law. I was chosen to service in Sarawak Mental Health Associaton (SMHA) Half-way Home at Kota Sentosa with my 14 colleagues. 6th of September 2016 SMHA is a non-government organization (NGO) which has the objectives of promoting good mental health amongst the general population and providing support and community services to those who are affected by mental health issues, giving attention to both sufferers and care givers. This NGO was initiated in 1969 and has branch in Kuching, Miri and Sibu. Dr Ismail Drahman stated that public’s rising awareness the importance of mental health as evidence by increasing number of cases that treated in Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) compare in 2003 (Borneo Post Online, 2015). There are patients who owns’ will to seek help and treatment. However, they still suffer from discrimination and stigma. Chairman of SMHA, Chai Shoon Tong stated that SMHA functionally educate public especially fighting stigma relation to mental illness. SMHA provide support and rehab to people recovering from mental illness by running a group home and encourage public to visit the resident and mingle with them (Borneo Post Online, 2015).
