One of my first experiences with stress was in one of my first jobs as a software tester in 2001. This was during the post-2000 dot-com stock market crash. Revenues at the company drastically reduced quarter to quarter and eventually layoffs were announced. I saw my group cut in half, yet the workload remained the same. In my case, I feel that I have successfully accomplished my goal of lowering my stress and living a lifestyle that is better suited to me. Changing the environmental factors was key in significantly reducing my stress level.

The high-tech field is not one that I would like to return to. Stone and Joseph (1999) stated that it is an area where “60-hour work weeks are the norm and the divorce rate is among the highest in the country”(Science & Technology, para. 3). Although, earning a great high was nice, the work environments that I have experienced were not worth the paycheck. I burned out and chose to move to Thailand where I could live a more comfortable lifestyle and help others by teaching English. Without a mortgage and a much lower cost of living, I have time to exercise and pursue the things in life that interest me. I exercise regularly and managing time is much easier when there is more time to manage. I apply an adequate level of challenge stressors to myself to stay focused on building my online company along with managing the foreign staff at my school.
