While going through nursing school at Mount Mercy I volunteered at several places. During my sophomore year at Mount Mercy I decided to volunteer at Tanager Place in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Tanager Place provides a place for children to stay while they attend a variety of behavioral health programs that help them manage their mental health illness. Every week I would go to Tanager and help assist the leaders with the after school programs where we would create activities that the children could learn certain skills from. One day we played dodgeball and the children ended up realizing that teamwork is crucial and that everyone should be nice to one another because if they didn’t throw the ball to their teammates who were out they would be the only one left and their team would lose. Creating activities for the children made me realize how much we can teach them through a game and how their personalities can change within a matter of weeks. Volunteering at Tanager Place was a great opportunity for me to be able to help children overcome a stressful moment in their life and see how big of an impact I made in their life. …show more content…
The Indian Creek Nature Center was building a new building down the road for the children and needed assistance in planting plants all around the building. While I volunteered there I helped dig up lots of plants and replant them around the building. I helped plant the plants on a large turtle that they had made out of dirt for the kids to be able to climb and sit on while they were there. Volunteering at the Indian Creek Nature Center was a great opportunity to help the staff because they were in desperate need and were unable to get much assistance from the community. I was so happy to be able learn how to plant plants properly and be a part of the landscaping process of the children’s learning
Overall, the volunteer experience provided a great learning opportunity that
The organization, which I decided to volunteer two hours of my day to, was Cumac. Cumac is located in Paterson, New Jersey and they work to serve the people in the counties of Passaic, Paterson, and Northern New Jersey. They work with a staff of 21 and volunteers from all over to help people in need with food and supplies they would need to survive. Their mission statement is: “CUMAC feeds people and changes lives. It works to alleviate hunger and its root causes for those in need in Paterson, Passaic County, and northern New Jersey.”
A volunteer experience of mine that comes to mind is one that is probably my most favorite volunteer experience yet. It is one that I get to do at my very own school called DUCK Week (Doing Unselfish Charities for Kids), which is a week long event that I have been a part of since I joined Piedmont Schools as a second grader. What makes this charity unique is that it focuses only on a member or a few members in our very own community, which is why we are able to be so successful with it. It is easier for someone to understand the need to help when it is someone that they may know. This small town in Oklahoma rallies around community members and together we raise funds to help those in need.
I volunteered through an organization called Feeding Many. As a volunteer, we planted community gardens where the food produced is donated for those struggling to afford their daily needs. In preparation for joining the NHS, I was an active member of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) and accrued over 70 hours of volunteer time during my tenure. As a middle school student I volunteered as a leader for WEB (Where Everybody Belongs). WEB is a program that assigns a responsible leader/mentor for a group of incoming sixth graders to help them acclimate to their first year of middle school.
In my freshman year, I made a choice to relinquish some of my social life and replace that time giving back to my community. I joined a non-profit organization called the Volunteer Corp. We spent our time at food banks, park clean-ups, and even hosting local events. This experience left a lasting impression on me in many ways; however, one experience changed my perspective on life and serve as a constant reminder of how the smallest contribution to others can be the most powerful. St. Joseph University, in Philadelphia, held an event called Hand in Hand. It was an event dedicated to raising awareness for people with physical and/or developmental disabilities.
Soliciting was a very gratifying experience because it exposed me to the willingness of people to help out the community. Volunteering at Evening for Habitat was another meaningful experience. I found it incredible how the people involved in Evening for Habitat, the guests and volunteers, all came together to help a family in need in our community. These volunteering allowed me to see the positive impact that Habitat makes in the community.
My other volunteer experience was very similar but also very different. I again was coaching lacrosse to girls ages six to seventeen but this time, I was volunteering at the club lacrosse program that has made me into the person I am today. In 2012, my travel lacrosse team got taken over by the lacrosse empire, Revolution Lacrosse. Rev Westchester was an experience
I have had the unforgettable opportunity to personally raise $1,400 for kids to go to summer camp, whose families could not afford it otherwise. I have worked at food drives, homeless shelters, and kid’s programs in my town, in hopes to make someone’s day a little bit better and ultimately make my community stronger. These experiences shaped who I am today. While I cherish the experience I had making a difference in my own town, I am ready to grow and leave a positive impact somewhere else in the country.
Throughout high school I have participated in many different activities and programs, but one of the opportunities I was given I will carry with me forever. As a junior at River Valley I participated in the Marion General Teen Volunteer Program. After interviewing and being placed in the physical therapy unit I took the opportunity to branch out into other areas of the hospital. I soon made my way to the labor and delivery floor where everyday a miracle happened. My duties while volunteering included assisting the nurses during hearing checks, changing diapers, and rocking crying infants in special care.
This event was at the beginning of the year and was a fantastic way for me to become involved in a new activity which I will continue to attend and try to help out with for years to come. Volunteering my time to be able to make a day special for others was truly a memorable experience that I will carry with
My experience in the volunteer world has given me the direction to see many views on the world we live in today. I have gone on a week-long mission trip 4 summers in a row and 5 out of the last 6 and it has become
My favorite act of service that I have ever done was through the school’s project based learning. I had heard that the NWC Men’s Basketball Team was building a house a Haitian family who’s house had collapsed with all their belongings. I then contacted the men’s basketball coach asking if my group and I could raise money to buy items for their house. We organized a traditional bake sale, as well as an online bake sale, to raise money for the family. In the midst of baking 40 dozen cookies and 38 dozen cupcakes, I was coordinating with a missionary in Haiti, Krisie Mompremier, who knew what the family needed most.
Volunteering at McKenna Farms Therapy Services I was able to observe pediatric occupational therapy sessions. Not only did I get to observe Occupational Therapy sessions, but I observed Hippotherapy sessions too. What I found so unique about McKenna Farms is that they had Speech Therapist, Physical Therapist, and Occupational Therapist all together at one clinic. This allowed me to witness how the different types of therapy fit together and how the therapist would collaborate to find the best way to treat the children. My favorite part was finding ways to communicate with the kids.
Before I volunteer at the Child Development Center, I did not know how to sand and seal the wood. Moreover, I didn’t know the purpose of it until I volunteer there. Beside, I did not only learned a new skill, I also helped someone. Throughout the process of volunteering, the hardest part was to ask.
Volunteering is a way of helping others. It is giving a person 's time and ability to help someone who may be in need of help. Not only does volunteering help others, but what they may not know is that it can be helpful to themselves. It is a great way for someone to interact with others in their community. It gives someone that time to themselves while also creating bonds when they are doing the greater good.
