Reflective Journal

In the third week of June, my colleagues Albee, Daniel and I went to Fangniuchang Hope School in a remote village in Yunnan. Twelve iPads were sent to that school last year without further instructions. Therefore we were going to upgrade the software and teach children and teachers to use iPads properly. In one day we had to give classes to all students, mainly introducing educational APPs. Fortunately, children were all well behaved, though appeared a bit shy to me. Everything went smoothly until a little boy approaching to us in the lunch hour. He hesitated for a while, standing outside of the classroom and sometime took a peep. Finally he walked towards us, and I felt there was something special because the boy was close to tears. To my surprise, he grabbed Daniel’s cloths and said, “I have a secret and I only want to tell you.” So they went out and talked. It turned out that the boy missed …show more content…

It was the first time that I became a teacher, and I nearly wasted a chance to listen carefully to children’s worries and dreams. If Daniel did not try hard to make friends with students, we might never know the story of that little boy. And we would know so little about each other that this journey was just superficial. I wish I had walked out of my comfort zone earlier. It is not only because of the big influence on children mentioned above, but also for the sake of self-development. Rarely do we have the chance of getting to know children’s life in such remote area, neither do we communicate with them in depth. Thanks to my change of thought in the lunch break, in this trip I got to know many facts that beyond my expectation. For example, children can be satisfied so easily regardless of the poor facilities, and many of them got used to the hard life while strive for a better
