I worked with my school nurse, Brenda this week; she was wonderful. I was able to find my student for the IHP and have their mother sign the permission slip; therefore, I was able to start interviewing my student. My student is a very sweet; 12-year-old Type 1 Diabetic. During the interview, I looked at my student holistically; by thinking about who she is as a whole and why she may behave in certain ways. I also thought about ways I can promote, maintain, and restore health for this student.

I checked my patients one by one to see if they were stable and responsive. With Nurse Dre Dre, the night nurse, I got to do suctioning, tracheotomy care and start feedings. I feel like I’m getting confidently effective with my communication skills everyday that my I’m learning and enhancing my nursing skills. I was able to educate a family member who was not wearing protective equipment inside an isolation room the importance of wearing one to prevent the spread of infections and promote wellness.
I didn’t know how to respond. I wanted to ask what the hell a catheter even was but couldn’t find the courage to do so. I looked towards my mother pleading with eyes for her to explain the situation to me, I didn’t like feeling so lost. My mom must have got the message because she immediately took control and gave the doctor the go-ahead to do the procedure. Dr. Sarah sent in a group of nurses all dressed in the same colored scrubs with a gurney, strange tube like equipment, and they gave me a hospital gown to change into.
I got to see several ways that nurses provide care for their patients. I observed ICU nurses care for their ill, elderly patients. I witnessed physical therapy nurses assist their patients to ambulate immediately post-surgery. I noticed how fast ER nurses work to triage their patients. I learned a lot from those nurses but could not decide which unit was meant for me.
Supporting a healthy life rhythm. Nurses support a healthy rhythm in lives of adolescent by making parts of their everyday life visible, as well as being encouraging and giving advise. Assessing health behaviours. School nurses should assess the health behaviours of these youth and encourage parents to monitor their adolescents activities. I had a clinical day at the rehabilitation unit at the University of Utah hospital. There was a situation that challenged my therapeutic communication skills. The client was a 24-year old female who was wheeling around in her wheelchair when the nurses were gathering for shift change. I walked into the unit and was waiting to be assigned to a nurse for the day near the front of the unit. This is when the client wheeled up to me, asked who I was, and stated she was having a difficult morning.

My kindergarten teacher always called me the mother hen of her class. She called me that because I would always make sure others were doing what they were supposed to be doing and I would make sure that everyone was okay and happy. For example, if someone got sick in class, I would constantly ask them if they needed anything, and I would get it for them. Since then I’ve always wanted to be a nurse; I want to help others. There are many personal experiences I can relate to nursing.

It monitors and evaluates whether the goals of improving health indicators are met or getting worse. Community health problems should be analyzed in order to comprehend and effectively resolve the problem ("Analyzing Community Problems", 2015). Levels of prevention are phases wherein healthcare professionals can intervene in the health of individuals and communities. Primary prevention involves seeking ways to prevent a person from having a disease they can be prone to.

These organizations recognize that there are many aspects of our social and physical environment that can directly influence the quality of one’s health. As a result, Healthy People 2020 has implemented a ten year plan whose primary goal is to improve the overall health of communities across America and therefore, build a healthier society. With this in mind, the plan identifies five key categories and multiple sub-categories or social determinants, relevant to improving health.

Medications are provided to students at Harding. On a regular basis, students with diabetes, ADHD, and asthma visit the nurse’s office to receive their medications. Tylenol and Ibuprofen are dispensed with limitation to students. students can only receive a certain amount of these medications with the school year. Mental health services are supported with the assistance of a social worker, success worker, behaviorists, school therapist, and counselors.
