Traditionally, the doctor is recognized to be more powerful in that he can influence the patient in terms of advice and medical treatment (Stoeckle, 1987). However, time has changed. While technology accelerates, people around the world adapt and catches the fast pace of changes. In 2015, 3.3 billion users worldwide are connected to the internet (Internetworldstats). As the number of Internet users has increased, many people who visit Health websites on the Internet do so as a potential patient, referring to e-patient. According to the Pew Research Center (2001), 55% of the American public (52 million people) has used the Internet to access the Web to get health or medical information. In response to the following quote by Kronenfeld, J.J., this paper includes the use of Internet for information …show more content…
Use of Internet for information impact the doctor-patient relationship
Communication between doctor and patient is the essence of a successful visit. It is thought that the best doctor-patient relationship is one in which the patient and the doctor are both seen as contributing to a good outcome (Canavan 2001). In the traditional doctor-patient relationship, the doctor has been the information provider for the patient who had limited or no access to quality medical information. According to Broom (2005) the doctor’s greater
Introduction Health is the way that gives a freedom from disease and sickness. Technological innovation has yielded a phenomenal growth in health care to deliver good health practice and patient outcome. One of the paramount outcome from technology in health care is ehealth. ehealth is an emerging practice in the fields of health and medical, that is delivered through technology by communication and information technologies to improve efficiency, effectiveness and quality of clinical and business process that are in practice by healthcare institutions for better healthcare even in remote places. Using ehealth will help in advanced quality of care, minimises the medical errors and from the organizational view it helps in financial aspects and is easy to work 2.
Since many health information infrastructure systems are relatively new, there is still variability in the implementation stages that different organizations have achieved. Additionally, most systems will have more than one capability that provides value, so the relationship between the system’s functionality and the resulting impact to patient care must be analyzed in order to determine the value it provides (Einstein, Juzwishin, Kushniruk, & Nahm, 2011). Value of health information infrastructures can be assessed in many different ways, including whether the technology allows the availability of useful information, how that information is utilized by staff and patients, and its impact on health outcomes. For information to be of value and influence medical decision making, it must be comprehensive, accessible, useful, and valid (Fitterer, Mettler, Rohner, & Winter, 2011).
In James F. Childress and Mark Siegler’s article, “Metaphors and Models of Doctor-Patient Relationships: Their Implications for Autonomy,” they discuss the types of relationships in healthcare and how those relationships allow the physician and patient to interact to make negotiations. Childress and Siegler say that relationships are either between intimates or between strangers and that when it is between strangers there is a lack of trust because of the way physicians are viewed most days. Because of the way society has turned to rules and regulations and the pluralistic nature of our society, physicians are often viewed as technicians and contractors rather than as parents or friends. Often times people refuse to visit the doctor’s office because there is a lack of trust towards the idea of a physician rather than the physician herself. Health care has become dictated by economics and politics, which are fields people consider to be cold and calculating.
If a person needs to know about certain medical conditions and cannot afford to go to a physician, he or she may go to a governmental website and receive mostly accurate information. In fact, Rehman states that “government websites and websites of national organizations (as identified by URL ending in .org) had the highest level of accuracy (80.9% and 72.5%, respectively)”. Therefore, if internet users rely on government websites there will be a lower chance of getting the wrong facts. This is a great advantage to people who lack health insurance or live in rural areas.
Telehealth is an up and coming form of virtual medical care that has entered the health care industry the past few years. Telehealth allows the medical professional provide care to the patient without an in-office visit. Types of care that you can get through telehealth include receiving results, mental health treatment, skin conditions, urgent care issues (cold, coughs, and stomach aches), surgical follow ups, physical therapy, and prescription management (telehealth.gov, 2023). After the presentation my perception of telehealth did change.
Electronic Health Records and Patient Confidentiality Technology has become an essential part of our everyday life therefore, it makes sense that doctors and hospitals get rid of the old fashioned paper charting and use technology to access patient records. Electronic health records (EHR) provide quick access to information, as doctors no longer have to wait for other providers to fax previous records to them. The accessibility of Electronic Health Records assist medical providers to make quick medical care decisions, by accessing previous care provided to patients including treatment and diagnosis. Quick access to information through EHR enables health care providers to treat patients faster as there is no need for records to be mailed or
Most of us probably cannot recall a world without internet, cellphones, and laptops. Technology has transformed the world we live in today. Undoubtedly, technology has changed the way health care is delivered. Electronic prescribing allows prescribers to send prescriptions electronically and directly to the pharmacy. E-prescribing has been demonstrated to reduce prescribing errors in outpatient settings.
Health information exchanges have the potential to make the quality of care a patient receives better than it has ever been as physicians and support staff have a plethora of information at their fingertips. It truly is an exciting time to be a part of this constantly evolving
Telehealth offers real-time communication where a patient consults with a physician or where a nurse practitioner consults with a specialist through a link. In such cases, the patient can access primary care without going to the clinic. Reaching patients at home saves not only travel times and related practitioners and patients expenses but also improves patient survival as well as recovery. Effectiveness of the TELEHEALTH (ethical-legal issues) The effectiveness of telehealth technology is affected by issues of ethics, costs of infrastructure and legal issues.

The technological advancements have not only helped nurses to be better informed, but have also helped the clients to be better informed. Informed patients and families can help the nurses and HCPs by speaking up about symptoms they have noticed that the health care team may have been unable to witness or may have look past. Technology being available to everyone is mostly a good luxury, at the same time, many people can be misinformed and cause more trouble demanding treatments or care that are unsuitable for them because they read about it online. 3.
“Technology and the Future of Healthcare.” Journal of Public Health Research, U.S. National Library of Medicine, 1 Dec. 2013,
They are able to use secure messaging to ask point related questions and receive shorter response times than waiting on a phone calls. This method is efficient with the doctors as well, they are not being overloaded with incoming phone calls and patients avoid miscommunication or missed phone calls. Once they leave their doctor they are able to review doctors' notes in the case the patient did not remember what was discussed. Health information exchange has many benefits, however there are many challenges as well. HIEs have to select one or more vendor to deliver services in a successful manner.
Healthcare providers are able to use these advancements in technology to provide healthcare services to patients from a distance. This provide ease of access and flexibility to patients. Telehealth services compared to in-person visits, has the potential to save millions of dollars (Kvedar, 2014). However, there are quite
One of the ways in which technology has improved technology and quality of life of patients, by making sure that the caregivers and medical personnel can do their work effectively. Due to technology patients can be able to remain in their homes and still receive care through technology. The doctors can share information with patients digitally, which means that the doctors do not need to be present physically for the treatment to be effected. The advent of technology has also improved the diagnostic approaches. Currently, patients can be able to carry out their diagnosis by typing in symptoms on a computer and read the results; this eventually reduces the extra fees that would have been incurred as consultation fees.
