The Grand Rapids Report on Evangelism and Social Responsibility

Evangelism was the main focus for Christian in the past while social services and social actions were considered as the supporting tools in sharing of the Gospel and expansion of the kingdom of God. The previous of ecumenical movements show us that the idea of social responsibility and social involvement were as important as evangelism. However, many of newer generation of Christian was born with the heart of missionary which is the heart to serve and involve more in all area of the society. Therefore, the relationship between evangelism and social responsibility were brought into discussion more during the latter ecumenical movements and consultations (pp. 168-169).

However, the discussion on relationship between evangelism and social responsibility was not clear enough to understand. For example, the Lausanne Covenant in 1974 stated “The Nature of Evangelism” in paragraph 4 and “ Christian Social Responsibility” in paragraph 5 but the relationship between them was not explained clearly. There was not enough information on the definition of social responsibility, the responsibility for each group or person and the way it related to evangelism.
