As revenue generators, Nurse Practitioners (NP) must be aware of how their work contributes to the overall revenue of the clinical practice. As healthcare dollars continue to shrink and the focus on providing more care with less grows, it is important for the NPs to understand the key concepts of productivity and value to comprehend the true contribution NPs make to their practice. The concepts of quality, efficiency, effectiveness, and patient satisfaction are the key factors that influence the final result. Value can be measured through number of ways such as patient satisfaction. Many clinical activities of NP can bring value to the practice. The NP can provide services that are typically provided by physicians. An NP can increase access to the practice for patients, this can increase the appointments available to them, results in greater satisfaction and thus greater value. The NPs are also positioned to coordinating care in an increasingly complex health-care system. All these activities bring unique value to the profession. The Nurse of the Future (NOF) Core Competencies Models were choosing to achieve one optimal goal of providing quality of care to patients and their families. The NOF Nursing Core Competency provides a normal structured of approach to nursing and patient care, and they are all equally important in their unique ways. However, out of the 10 Nurse of the Future Core Competencies, I have chosen Healthcare professionalism and quality improvement which in my opinion are two main core outstanding competencies. Professionalism in any profession dictates the conduct, purpose, or qualities that define a profession.
One similarity between NPs, other APNs and PAs is that, they all play a very important role in health care and patient centered approach of care is their objective. Also, their practice is based upon their education, training and certification in collaboration and under supervision of physicians. In studying Registered Nursing one will find that they have to be compassionate and want to care for others. Registered Nurses assist physicians with suffering patients of any medical condition. They help to decide the patient’s medicine, treatment, recovery, and educate the them and their families on post-medical treatment. They need to have bedside manner, and be able to prepare patients for surgery. Registered Nursing careers range anywhere from critical care, oncology, mental health, to an everyday school nurse.
Every nursing, in order to consider the profession must have an understanding of at least three of the five professional values, in my opinion. These values consist of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice (Taylor 96). Beginning with the professional value of Altruism, the believe in or practice and self concern for the well-being of others (96). I believe that in order to be the best nurse you can be for your patients, you must understand the concept of altruism. As a nurse, your profession is to take care of people, if you do not know the professional value of altruism than you cannot possibly understand how important it is to care about the wellbeing of your patient.

Nursing, and everything that it entails, cannot be easily described in just one simple word or phrase. It goes beyond the meaning of a profession and the stereotypical definition of treating the ill. Nursing is the “protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2010, p. 1). Therefore, it is a career that requires dedication, passion, critical thinking, and knowledge.
