Jehovah’s Witnesses Religion is seen as a stable and reliable way to forget about worries and what all is going on around in the world today. Some people are just programmed to desire the need for a religious yearning. This need can be so strong that they will take great lengths to serve their God to the best of their abilities. But what if this particular religion requires more than just regular attendance every Sunday morning? A religion that commands rules outside of what is written in the bible, and can put their followers in danger of psychological and emotional issues and even get away with killing their own. Jehovah’s Witnesses refer to themselves as Christian Creationists. They are also best well known as the ones who come to the …show more content…
If someone were to ask an active Jehovah’s Witnesses member if they think they are a part of a religious cult, their answer would surely be a resounding no. No one wants to admit that they may or may not be a part of a religion with cult tendencies, but the followers of the Jehovah’s Witnesses organization can be oblivious to what happens around them. The characteristics of the organization compared to what a standard cult would be defined as are almost uncanny. “Exploitive-destructive cults concentrate a large percentage of their efforts on recruiting new members and controlling the financial, social, familial, and sexual or aggressive lives of their members ‘for their own good’” (Peter Olsson 40). Jehovah’s Witnesses require mandatory door-to-door witnessing every Saturday morning, they require contributions, and they control who you associate with and how you are supposed to raise your families and so on. There is no normal religious behavior practiced by this …show more content…
Many churches have been involved in legal ordeals regarding child sexual abuse cases, unto which were all disclosed and handled by the authorities properly. Jehovah’s Witnesses have more recently been called out on their actions taken when it comes to how they handle cases of sexual misconduct with minors. If a young child or teenager who was sexually abused were to seek out help from one of the officials at the church, they would not immediately take it to the authorities. No rather the issue is kept within closed doors and handled between the church elders; the pastors or heads of the congregations. Discipline is formed for the perpetrator and the case is closed and not taken to officials, rather, the victim has to live knowing that their abuser is still in close contact to them. The reasoning behind these rash decisions are based on “following the Bible” (Patrick). Typically when the perpetrator is found guilty they are “often banned from the church for a number of years, or they are demoted in the church hierarchy” (Patrick) and are eligible to come back into good standing if repentant of their
To fully understand the reasons behind a man’s commitment to a cult, and the choice to lead and continue the unorthodox cult sect, it is important to look at his upbringing. Warren Jeff’s was born on December 4th, 1955 as the 14th child of Rulon Jeffs, the prophet before his son took over. Polygomy within this sect began before Warren’s reign, as Rulon, his father, was said to have about 20 wives and 60 children. With so many wives and children, it is unusual for the 14th to take over such a task as taking over the religious sect. However, Warren Jeffs was born three months premature, and therefore was seen as a miracle child to his father, thus beginning a strong relationship between Warren Jeffs and his father Rulon.
A cult is a system of religious belief and devotion directed towards a particular object. The Branch davidians are a group of people that is devoted to one particular person and Religion. David Koresh is the main leader of the group and is located in Waco Texas. In the documentary Waco The Inside Story the police went to talk to the group due to safety issues regarding the children. The group had many weapons and ammunition located where they were living.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT A cult, according to Merriam Webster, is a small religious group that is not part of a larger and more accepted religion and that has beliefs regarded by many people as extreme or dangerous. The Branch Davidians was a cult. It was a spinoff of the Seventh-Day Adventists. The Seventh-Day Adventist church is a church that believes Jesus will come back to earth one day, and they use Saturday as the Sabbath day.
And those sort of things are forgivable. That's half the point of having confession in church - you need to be able to fess up to what you've done” (Macaulay Culkin). This quote is very relevant because they should have confessed. THe church fed everyone lies, and not what is actually
Jim Jones was religious cult leader who started the Peoples Temple and lead a group to Guyana, South America. He convinced people that he was God, but that changed when he started making them participate in dangerous practices. To see if the people of Jonestown were loyal to him, he would hold suicide practices, called "White Nights"where followers would drink a liquid that they believed was poisonous. Jim Jones gave members relentless punishments if they went against him and were forced to work strenuously out in the fields. Late at night, they were compelled to go to long, tedious meetings and guards kept them in the camp just like slave catchers.
The Baha’i Faith is a monotheistic religion that believes God sent a series of divine educators to earth for the benefit of man and that “Bahá’u’lláh, the latest of these Messengers, explained that the religions of the world come from the same Source and are in essence successive chapters of one religion from God.” At a time when whites and blacks remained segregated in Nashville, the Baha’i’s welcomed members of all races and religions to 1804 Grand Avenue. The group
Also, if you are a southern baptist then you adhere very closely to the bible. If the member is baptised that means they are baptised in that church, but if they go to another southern baptist church maybe not in that particular area then they have to get baptised in that church too. Southern baptists view all people equal under gods eyes, and believe that the man in the family is the leader of the house, and protects the family. The role of women is that they are equal but have separate
The young woman’s interests seems to be in her religious Jehovah’s Witnesses beliefs. She is advised she and her baby can die due to the single-vehicle car crash. The woman seems to be experiencing faith vs. life. Can this crash be a test of faith? Will she be kept alive by her beliefs if she chooses not to have the blood transfusion?
Yenesis Murillo 16 December 2015 Professor Cummings RS 100 The Hidden Religious Significance of American Baseball Abstract I have reviewed the hidden religious significance in American Baseball, how similar the two matters tie together is remarkable. There is not one aspect of baseball that does not tie together with religion from the first pitch being thrown to the hot dog eating fan in the stand; the similarities are undeniable. I. Introduction
The community is aware of their surroundings and the contemporary world but would not accept if one of their own devotees wanted to join the secular
As a religion people work towards a goal of bettering themselves or bettering their environment. This idea can nearly be regarded as fact for some branches of religion have been around for thousands of years and have followers in every corner of the globe claiming that their ideology and faith of religion has helped them in the past and will continue to help them in the future. For cults, this goal is often illegal or immoral after all cults are almost always shrouded in mystery and details are often withheld from the public. Cults of some form or other have been around for as long as organized religion, during the first-century people of the Roman Empire began to reject Christianity because it was something new and instead valued Judaism as this had been around a long time. It was around this time that politicians began to spread vicious rumors that Christians were beginning to take part in “group sex acts” during what was called “love fests”, it was also thought that they took part in sacrificing infants to their god.
When sexual abuse occurs children often act or behave in ways that are counterintuitive to what society believes they should behave. In 1983, Dr. Roland Summit developed the Child Sexual Abuse Accommodation Syndrome model to help others understand the many ways in which children react to sexual abuse. The model is broken down into 5 stages, the first two Secrecy and Helplessness are the preconditions to the occurrence of sexual abuse and the remaining three Entrapment and Accommodation, Delayed, Conflicted, and Unconvincing Disclosure, and the finally Retraction, are sequential contingencies which take on increasing variability and complexity (Summit, 1983). Children are more than often sexually abused by someone they know and trust.
Through partaking in interaction rituals, individuals become members of something greater than themselves. This feeling of being apart of something greater than oneself provides a moral community for the individuals, which then guides individuals in their beliefs and behaviors. It is similar to a never-ending circle; as individuals see the emotionally charged environment that this religion provides, they want to be a part of it, so they partake in unusual rituals, which furthers their engagement and emotional connectedness to their community. It almost reminds me a bit of an addiction. This community turns objects, such as poison and snakes as sacred, which in turn creates a sacred and profane world.
David Koresh Teaching followers. Koresh preached he was the Messiah and that if his followers obeyed his words, they would enter with him into the kingdom of heaven. The Davidians compound was located in Waco Texas. Here, Koresh led the end of his reign and prepared for "apocalyptic" measure with fire arms and other alleged materials.
What is religion? Why is mankind addicted to this conception unlike other species? Why does humanity submit to one, or multiple super powerful entities? Is there a neurological component that drives humans or is part of the societal construction? Such overwhelming questions have subjective answers due to varying descriptions of entities and research.
