Religion and Medical Procedures.
Why are religions allowed to continually censor medical procedures and advancements that may put their followers at risk for serious health problems without any repercussions/consequences? The primary reason for that censorship is that many religious organizations/leaders view certain medical practices as morally or ethically unacceptable. These beliefs can result in censoring medical practices and advancements that are against specific religious beliefs. This can lead to restricting access to certain forms of medical treatment and limit the progress of medical research in these areas. Religion and spirituality are significant in many individuals' lives and can significantly

And not impose their own religious, anti-religious, or ideologic systems of beliefs on their patients, nor should they substitute such beliefs or rituals for accepted diagnostic concepts or therapeutic practices”(p. 156). This emphasizes the importance of medical professionals respecting their patient’s beliefs and points out the importance of remaining impartial and professional. Psychiatrists need to be able to address religious and spiritual issues, as they can have a significant impact on an individual’s mental health. Some religious individuals view mental health conditions as a spiritual problem or the result of sin rather than a medical issue. The religious literature does not cover the complexity of mental health conditions, which can lead to resistance to seeking professional treatment, and professionals will be unable to provide adequate care. Some people hold anti-psychiatric beliefs and may reject psychotherapy or medication in treating mental health conditions. As a result, these religious beliefs could result in someone experiencing shame, guilt, or self-blame that conflicts with their experiences or behaviors. Then, …show more content…
Patients may have different religious beliefs and practices that can impact their medical decisions. Understanding these intersections can lead to more respectful and informed medical care. Healthcare providers should work to respect patients’ religious beliefs and offer accommodations as necessary (Institute of Medicine, 2001). Through this understanding, we can work towards providing medical care that is ethically sound and respects people’s religious beliefs. The primary reason for conflict between medical conditions and spiritual treatment is rooted in the belief that healing should be based on prayer and faith rather than science and medicine. It is important to recognize the importance of both medical and spiritual healing practices and encourage open communication and cooperation. By doing so, we can ensure that individuals receive the best possible care and support for their physical, emotional, and spiritual
This is because, they were defined as a substantial burden which might cause the religions to support immoral behaviors such as abortion which goes beyond their principles. In fact, the Secretary Department of Health and Human Services violated
L.M. affiliates herself with Christian beliefs, she attends church regularly and describes her faith as a “saving grace through very trying times.” Both family members seek and are treated with Western medicine practices and they are both currently free of any diseases and/or ailments. L.M. describes health and wellness as “free from disease and good overall physical and mental wellbeing.” She also believes that to be truly well one must have faith in God and attend church regularly.
This article is related to Unit 1 lecture on Ethics and Values taught by Mrs. Townes. To provide optimal care for individuals of different religious cultures, practices and beliefs nurses must be skilled in identifying best practices when caring for patients. Understanding a patient’s religious beliefs and values will determine if that patient receives efficient and standard care based on their own beliefs. Buddhist may deny certain medication based on the make-up or components of the medication and whether medications will alter their normal state of mind. The best care for a patient of Buddhist ethnicity is to provide them with a calm environment that will allow patients to meditate, practice relaxation techniques, and chanting rituals.
Strong spirituality influence a belief that health and illness is determined by God. Having good health is viewed as being as good luck or being rewarded (Giger & Davidhizar, 2004*), while Illness is viewed as a punishment from God for bad behaviors (Alvarado, 2008). Although, spirituality is a coping mechanism used to maintain or reestablish emotional equilibrium during difficult times, many Mexican Americans may delay seeking or accepting medical interventions, especially when spiritual beliefs or rituals must be strictly observed (Nall & Spielberg, 1967). For this reason, it is crucial for nurses to seek clarification on how religion/spirituality may interfere with care and how this belief can positively or negatively impact health
The healing, then, is focused on the person, and not on the symptoms or the disease (Anonymous, 2008). They tend to view illness as something that comes from evil spirits or punishment for not carrying out personal rituals or perhaps a curse from the dead (Carteret, 2013), it is because of these beliefs that they would turn to specials rituals and seek council with an elder. The steps they might take are to participate in drumming, go into a sweat lodge, talking circles, ceremonial tobacco smoking, Shamans [healers], vision quests, smudging [the burning of herbs], chants or ceremonies, or the person might abstain from food and water, once deemed illegal [now legal as The Freedom of Religion Act 1978] to rid the disease or evil spirits, or a fusion of Western medicine and Native American healing for a synergistic effect (Anonymous, 2008). Other cultural practices are that the healing process chosen last over days, is kept secret from outsiders, and to have anything removed during a surgical procedure back to them, so that they cannot be used on another family member. Autopsy is not allowed as the body needs to be whole to cross over to the spiritual world (Abbott,
Health professionals may not agree with the methods and treatments of the healers
Summary The author of Integrative Approaches to Psychology and Christianity, David Entwistle (2010), states that the premise of the book is to help us understand human nature by “weaving together perspectives from psychology and Christian theology” (Entwistle, 2010, p. 13). His goal is to prove that, when used wisely, psychology and Christian theology can provide a more accurate picture of the physical and spiritual man “because both of them are concerned with truths revealed by God in nature and in His Word” (Entwistle, 2010, p. 221). The book discusses how the integration of Psychology and Christian Theology can be integrated, into Christian counseling, through our understanding of worldviews, counseling models, etc.
Johnson explains in his book that psychology and Christianity went hand-in-hand as a coalition. This is seemingly due to the church’s assumed responsibility of soul-care, and the belief that all problems were caused by sin, not necessarily mental illness (2010). However, there are currently several views of conflict between psychology and Christianity, similar to the conflict recurrently found between science and faith. There is importance in the correlation of psychology and Christianity for both scientists and Christians. When not examined and pondered on, the relationship between psychology and Christianity today can cause much confusion in an individual, potentially leading to atheism and evolutionism.
A writer will write their views on psychology and Christian then other writers responds to the views of the writer. In this book, the author will comment on what they agree or disagree about the views of the author of the psychological relationship with Christian. Now, I will summarize the contents in the book Psychology & Christianity: Five Views. From several view above, the level of explanation approach could be said the most liberal than others .The
The United States is composed of many cultures, traditions and religious beliefs, sometimes making it difficult to find the right treatment for each individual patient. Some may believe their religion will cure them from any disease and therefore reject any medical care, which can lead to unplanned visits to the emergency department, and to add to the situation there is also language barriers. “Members of certain religious communities are convinced that their religious beliefs and practices reduce their risk for chronic diseases (Christiansen et al). Religious beliefs can influence members to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle, which will decrease their risk for heart failure.
At Grace Hospital, we work to respect the wishes of our patients through self-determination and patient-driven care through the involvement of patients and their families in the patient’s plan of care. As a social worker at Grace Hospital, I work from a strength-based, anti-oppressive framework. It is important for me to understand each patient’s ecosystem (i.e. support system), their own personal values and beliefs, and the knowledge and skills that they possess. By working from this framework, I am trying to develop a mutual trust and respect for one another which enables me to work together with the patient to develop an appropriate plan of action to help resolve their identified issues and concerns. When the clinical care team is working with a patient, we strive to provide them with all of the information and options to allow them to make an informed decision.
One limitation of banning conversion therapy is that it may be difficult to enforce such laws or regulations, especially in contexts where religious or cultural beliefs are used to justify the practice. Some individuals may also seek conversion therapy online or through unlicensed practitioners, making it difficult to regulate or monitor the practice. Another limitation of banning conversion therapy is that it may drive the practice underground, making it more difficult to provide support and resources for individuals who are harmed by the practice. It may also prevent some individuals from seeking help for fear of being stigmatized or discriminated against. Increasing awareness and education about the dangers of conversion therapy is also important, but it may not be enough to prevent the practice from occurring.
At their core, religions aim to provide answers to fundamental questions about the nature of existence, the meaning of life, and the relationship between humans and the divine. They offer moral and ethical guidance, promote compassion, love, and kindness, and provide a framework for individuals to seek spiritual growth and enlightenment. Religions often encourage virtues such as honesty, generosity, and forgiveness, and emphasize the importance of community, social harmony, and the pursuit of a higher purpose beyond materialistic pursuits. Additionally, many religions share common themes of interconnectedness, the value of prayer or meditation, and the belief in a transcendent reality beyond the physical world. While religions may differ in their cultural expressions and specific interpretations, they ultimately address universal human aspirations for meaning, purpose, and a connection to something greater than oneself.
Religion affects a lot in the medical field. Religion is important when treating a patient and when giving informed consent an essential role and caregiving of patients with terminal illnesses and chronic medical conditions is required . Religion has affected a lot modern medicine because of how people research stuff like cloning. Also, religion affects how you treat a patient. Religion has affected a lot in medicine because the research projects doctors do.
Culture and Religion seem to be working hand in hand in society, when looking at culture we look at characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, defined by everything from language, religion, food, social habits (things that are done natural e.g. saying please and thank you), music and arts. With religion people often use the word to mean the worship of a god or gods. However, some religions do not have gods. One thing that all religions have in common is that they help their believers to find meaning and comfort in the world by using some aspects from that particular religion. With culture and religion playing a big role in our everyday and life choices contraceptives go against a lot of cultural and religion choices and
