Religion's Role In Puritan Society

The Christian church dominance was a massive part in the medieval times, it shaped the society. The church made the rules and influenced people to follow god. People who didn’t believe in god and followed other gods would have been converted or killed. The Christian church had the power, money and land, they dominated medieval Europe. In England during that time period, everyone had to attend church, otherwise they would have to pay a fine, but wealthy people were less likely to be punished. During the Elizabethan Era, there was no separation between the Church and the state, like we have today. The established state religion (at the time, the Church of England) was decided by the king or queen, and was taught in schools. If someone didn’t conform to the official religion, it could be considered treason. If this was the case, that person could be put in prison, tortured, and/or executed.

The laws were not only in the government, but they were also brought up in church.

Religion, or more to say, God, was the leading point in which the Puritan’s were able to stumble upon the land since it was given to them. Thus how “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” comes into play, since God has to be praised and adored for him to bless us. God is the greater good and for which we have to follow. Religion influence the funding and development of New England Colonies because it was one of the main reasons why the people wanted to break away. The Church of England believed that everyone should praise God, but only on their terms. The people of the church believed that only certain people could interpret the word of God and this made a group of people angry. This group of people wanted to ‘purify’ the church, which is where they got the name the Puritans. Puritans believed all catholic based beliefs should be taken out of the church and that it was not required to worship God.

There seemed to be a lot more church going than before the war. There are several accounts where people write about going to church for prayer meeting or sermons during wartime. One reason this may be is that the people were scared and did not know how to help or where to turn except to their faith. People would go to church or multiple churches, multiple times a day.
