The Christian church dominance was a massive part in the medieval times, it shaped the society. The church made the rules and influenced people to follow god. In England during that time period, everyone had to attend church, otherwise they would have to pay a fine, but wealthy people were less likely to be punished. During the Elizabethan Era, there was no separation between the Church and the state, like we have today. The established state religion (at the time, the Church of England) was decided by the king or queen, and was taught in schools. If someone didn’t conform to the official religion, it could be considered treason. If this was the case, that person could be put in prison, tortured, and/or executed.
They made him attend school, do his homework, taught him the bible and even bought him nicer clothes. This happened because no one knew where his father Pap was, this was reoccurring. Most parents do not teach their children about other religion, only the religion they believe in. belief of Christianity has been sinned, taught with inclusion to others, and have made living in the Bible Belt scary.
The church would reinforce his authority and refer to him towards the people as the ‘Little Father’. The church was extremely influential in that era and ensured that peasants and working class, who were at the bottom of the classist system, were aware that challengers of the tsar were an insult to God. It was therefore hard to go against the Tsar, despite his rule being unfair to the poor. This leads on to Russia being hard to govern under tsarist rule due to autocracy. In his coronation speech in 1894, Tsar Nicholas said he will ‘uphold the principle of autocracy as firmly and unflinchingly as my late and unforgettable father’.
The Second Great Awakening The American Revolution had been known for having no religious or spiritual beliefs. This mainly was due to the separation from the control of political leaders. A number of religious revivals swept through the US from the 1790s and continued on into the 1830s. During this period of time, there has been a transformation of religion throughout the different aspects of the country.
Elie says that when that young boy died, his faith and religion died with too. The Jewish prisoners hold a prayer service for Rosh Hashanah and Elie refuses to join in. “ I was nothing but ashes now, but I felt myself to be stronger than this Almighty to whom my life had been bound for so long. In the midst of these men assembled for prayer, I felt like an observer, a stranger” (68). Elie, who once would have been fully active in the prayer service, now stood watching the prayer service like a stranger.
When Betty got sick in the beginning of the play he says to Proctor, The Putnams, and Giles “There is either obedience or the church will burn like Hell is burning! Parris to Proctor.” Parris is the third minister to go to through the church and this quote signifies his need for power to boost his own personal feelings. He is saying if they do not follow what he wants to do there will be a major price to pay. It shows how Parris just expects obedience from everyone since he is a minister.
Religion had a rather large influence on the Puritans. It not only influenced their thought process, but their everyday life and their government. Religion was a large part of the everyday life of the Puritans. Most of their laws were based off of and enforced by their religion. The laws were not only in the government, but they were also brought up in church.
Religion, or more to say, God, was the leading point in which the Puritan’s were able to stumble upon the land since it was given to them. Thus how “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” comes into play, since God has to be praised and adored for him to bless us. God is the greater good and for which we have to follow. Religion influence the funding and development of New England Colonies because it was one of the main reasons why the people wanted to break away. The Church of England believed that everyone should praise God, but only on their terms. The people of the church believed that only certain people could interpret the word of God and this made a group of people angry. This group of people wanted to ‘purify’ the church, which is where they got the name the Puritans. Puritans believed all catholic based beliefs should be taken out of the church and that it was not required to worship God.
Lastly, Tom’s terms and rules for religion changed after being bought by Legree. At Shelby’s and St. Clare’s homes, Tom was always practicing Christianity and was often looked up to as a pastor-like figure by the other slaves. There seemed to be a lot more church going than before the war. There are several accounts where people write about going to church for prayer meeting or sermons during wartime. One reason this may be is that the people were scared and did not know how to help or where to turn except to their faith. People would go to church or multiple churches, multiple times a day.

Although it was a huge event that happened, most have heard false accusations that did not actually happen.
