Did you know that during the Salem witch trials, over 200 people got accused of witchcraft? The Crucible takes place in Salem, MA during the trials. With all the panic around witchcraft, many people were accused of it, causing hysteria. But, there is usually one person to blame for contributing most to the hysteria. In Act 1 of The Crucible, Abigail is the most responsible for creating mass hysteria because she was found dancing in the forest, accused others of dancing with the devil, and had an affair with Proctor.
The original text and movie adaptations produce an evil Abigail that uses witchcraft to rid herself of the wife. In The Crucible, Abigail could have reduced the hysteria in Salem had she confessed about the affair, the use of sorcery, and not used manipulation.
Abigail knew from the beginning that her acts and falsehoods were immoral, yet she decided to keep doing them to portray herself as a saint. Before the performance began, the town's panic and fear of witchcraft had not yet spread, giving Abigail the chance to confess without suffering severe consequences, “I want to open myself!... I want the light of God!... I danced for the Devil;” (Page 595, Line 481, “The Crucible”). Nonetheless, she threatened the girls around her, “Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you,” (Page 575, “The Crucible” Act 1, Line 160).
In the play, The Crucible” , many people were hanged for being accused of witchcraft, and I believe it is all due to Abigail. For many various reasons, one being that since the very beginning of the book we read that she drank blood to kill Elizabeth Proctor, and she was always refusing to tell the truth. She had even threatened all the girls, and Betty to not expose her or they will never see the sun rise, meaning she would actually consider killing them. We also found out that Abigail had some kind of affair with John Proctor. Which is probably why she wanted to kill Elizabeth Proctor, but her affair was most likely the outcome of her drinking the blood, and accusing others of being involved in witchcraft.
Abigail’s mischievous behavior molded the start of salem witch trials. In Act 1 Abigail lie’s about what happened to Parris and threatening the girls to say what she want’s. Abigail tells the girls to say something or they wish they had never seen the sun go down. Abigail's type of behavior lying and threatening to cover her own self so she does not get in trouble.
Abigail lied many times throughout the Crucible. She was very desperate for John Proctor as shown many times throughout the story. Abigail’s love for proctor was the reason for all the many lies told by Abigail.
In The Crucible, Abigail accuses more than half the town of witchcraft to cover up her affair with a married man, John Proctor. She lies and accuses people to prevent being charged with attempted murder against Elizabeth Proctor, John Proctor’s wife, because of jealousy. Abigail who is very similar to Joseph McCarthy, she starts to accuse people who share a glance towards her direction or even people that she dislikes or offended her in some way. The people of the town grow intimidated or fearful of her because she throws false accusations and evidence towards anyone who may have upset her. In the playwright, The Crucible, it is shown that there are accusations thrown at people, but has no supported evidence for why some people of the town
The Salem Witch Trials caused absolute pandemonium within the city of Salem, Massachusetts. Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, tells a tale of a young woman who faces many difficulties in her life that result in her becoming the person she is. Abigail, the main character in The Crucible, is a vindictive individual who always wants her way, no matter whom she hurts. Throughout the play her accusations, manipulations, and affair with John Proctor leads her to become the absolute cause of the catastrophe in her community.
The reason for the mass hysteria and the trials of witchcraft in the book the Crucible were all because of Abigail Williams. There are many people to point fingers at in this book but activity of Abigail in this book is excruciating and outlandish. One of many reasons to point fingers at Abigail is because, after her affair with John Proctor, John went back to his wife and asked for forgiveness and then Abigail Drank blood and did so-called witchcraft to try and kill Elizabeth (John Proctor's wife). If Abigail never had the affair or never tried to drink blood there wouldn’t be such an issue in Salem. What also led to this was her and the girls allegedly dancing and making potions to form some sort of witchcraft to also kill Elizabeth.
In the play, The Crucible, a story told where the reader learns about lies, deceit, and hypocrisy. The play highlights how the puritans viewed witch trials in 1692. The character that was the most to blame for the Salem Witch trials and dreadful hangings, is Abigail Williams. There are two reasons Abigail Williams became the cause of all the Witch trials and hangings, the first being that she refused to admit to what she was doing in the forest with the other girls, the second was that she was resentful of the Proctor family.
Abigail displays many times in the story that she is an evil, coniving, and a corrupt person. Abigail states, “I have been near to murdered every day because I done my duty pointing out the Devil’s people --- and this is my reward? To be mistrusted, denied, questioned like a ---” (Miller 115). Abigail was in a precarious situation in the beginning of the play when herself and a group of girls were thought to be practicing witchcraft, so she developed lies about many other people in the village to save herself and the other girls that took part. She did not care if her lies caused innocent people to be murdered, as long as she kept her significant amount of power, and kept her high position in the village and the court.
In the play “The Crucible” Abigail follows the majority and gets her self into trouble. Abigail is the biggest reason all the girls meet in the woods to dance naked. Once they got caught dancing in the woods by parris she starts act differently she starts to lie and lie about stuff because it will reveal that she had and affair with john proctor. She accuses Elizabeth of casting a spell on her that caused her to be stabbed, but she really had stabbed herself. Abigail wants revenge on Elizabeth since she is in love with Proctor and Elizabeth is in the way justifying her ethics. In The Crucible Elizabeth is loving towards others unlike Abigail who revengeful.
