Paper Shoplifting is when a person walks into the store, with or without the intention of stealing in mind, picks up an item and walks out without paying for said item. There are a couple reasons why people shoplift, some are; one, the person is seeking some sort of thrill out of it or two, they do not have the money for the item they (are) stealing/stole. When shoplifters take things off the shelves and don’t pay for them the prices of the items that other consumers buy will have to go up to compensate for the items the shoplifters steal. Shoplifting today is dealt with by possible jail time, fines, and a permanent record (Alabama Shoplifting Laws). Shoplifting is not a good habit and it’s not a good affect on others. Shoplifting is concealing items on your person with the intent to steal and walking out of the store without paying for them. There are different types of shoplifting out there. The store owner(s) have to raise the prices of the other items causing the other consumers to have to spend more of their money and waste it on your misdeeds. Not only does it affect the consumers but also the police officers that have to take time away from more important duties, the judges who could be handling more important cases, etc. “Shoplifting affects more than the offender. It overburdens the police and the courts, adds to a store’s security expenses, costs consumers more for goods, costs communities lost dollars in sales taxes…” (Shoplifting Information and

The issue is whether the state has enough information to charge Mr. Gregg with retail theft in excess of 150 dollars beyond a reasonable doubt. A defendant can be charged with retail theft if the three elements discussed in People v. Hill 2014 IL APP (2d) 121099-U are met “a person commits the offense of retail theft when he or she knowingly: takes possession of, carries away, transfers, or causes to be carried away or transferred, any merchandise displayed, held, stored, or offered for sale in a retail merchandise establishment with the intention of depriving the merchant permanently of the possession, use, use or benefit of such merchandise without paying the full retail value of such merchandise”. When the three elements of retail theft

In the essay, “Terror’s Purse Strings” written by Dana Thomas and published in New York Times. Thomas begins talking about expensive fashion bags produced around the world. She elaborates how easy it is to mimic fashion and sell it for a cheaper price. Thomas implies how purchasing a fake product leads to child labor, a getaway to terrorism, and how they are run by crime syndicates. She suggests a solution for this issue and how people should stop buying fakes to take counterfeiters out of business.
When the sellers or the stores are in high demand and to make more than usually they need more people to work. By this more jobs are create and filled by many people. This is one way that it can help to lower the unemployment rate. When the unemployment goes down it helps the country to save money and pay off the debt they have. By paying off the debt and having less people on unemployment it helps the economy.

Shrinkage is theft of property and stock by shoplifters and thieves from outside the organization, this can be a simple thief stealing directly from the store and leaving without paying or something more serious like high jacking a van full of cash or a vehicle full of goods. The best way to address this for the store is to have items of high values security tagged so an alarm is activated if the item leaves the store without being purchased, also a simple security guard roaming around the store showing a presence to detect, deter and correct always helps especially if it is a huge retail store like Boots. For the high jacking or for the goods being stolen from vehicles, this is very simply prevented, routes should be changed often travelling
Two other theories are discussed in chapter 12 regarding drugs and crime: drug enslavement theory and general deviance syndrome theory. The book states that according to drug enslavement theory, “Drug users are forced into a life of crime because they cannot afford to pay for their drug habits unless they use crime to get money for their next fix” (Thio, 2013, pg. 311). The book states that according to general deviance syndrome theory, “The high correlation between drug use and crime does not mean that drug use causes crime because most drug users with a criminal record have committed crime before using drugs” (Thio, 2013, pg. 311). Both theories suggest that using drugs and committing crimes are related. Therefore, if marijuana use is legalized, the assumption can be made that there would essentially be some kind of decline in crime in regard to marijuana charges.
