The Odyssey Essay The movie “A New Hope” directed by Irvin Kershner is an example of how the character Obi-wan Kenobi is a mentor in the “Hero’s Journey” to Luke Skywalker. Although the character dies in the hands of Darth Vader from the duel of his fate. This gives Luke Skywalker his development as a whole character. As in “The Odyssey” how Athena is mentor to Odysseus.
A man named Joseph Campbell made a perfect archetype for the main character called “The Hero’s Journey.” Often described as three parts the separation, the initiation, and lastly the return. For the character to develop oneself as a person he or she will cross a point of “The Hero’s Journey” when they meet a mentor.

He is helpful, caring, inspirational and understanding. Obi-wan Kenobi often treated Luke as son (“Obi-Wan Kenobi Great Characters Wiki.com).
Luke begins his journey living with his Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru Lars on their moisture farming on a desert planet called Tatooine. He is still basically a child who still complains about his chores and wants a better life of adventure and not one his Uncle Owen wants him to live. He is kind of a strange old hermit.” At dinner Luke describes the message to Uncle Owen of a man called Obi-wan Kenobi and Luke says it could be connected to Old Ben. Luke in awe gets picked up by Obi-wan Kenobi and tells him Chewbacca, a first mate of the ship, might give them a ride. They sit at a table and meet Han Solo. He says he is captain of the Millenium Falcon, a spaceship. Says that they are looking for a ride through passage of the Alderaan system. Obi-wan asks for a fast ship. Han Solo says his ship “made the Kessel run in less than twelve parsecs.” Obi-wan asks him not to ask any questions. Han Solo says they have to give them ten thousand to leave. Luke says they can't pay that type of money.
