Throughout the book Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals, the reader can see that Melba is resilient, resourceful, and clever from how she acts in different situations. Melba has a variety of character traits, and the reader can clearly see them. The book builds the reader’s understanding of Melba’s personality by showing how she reacted to different experiences. There are many examples of her resilience, resourcefulness, and cleverness in the book that the reader should notice. Melba’s resilience is displayed multiple times because of her ability to continue through the pain. One such example is when Melba said she had “to be like a soldier in battle,” and she “could not imagine a 101st trooper crying or moping when he got hurt” (Beals …show more content…
While Melba was trying to use the restroom, some of the girls decided to throw papers lit with fire at her, so Melba “picked up her books and tossed one upward as hard as she could, in a blind aim to hit her attackers” (Beals 164). Melba finds a way to escape even though it seems she is trapped. She uses the materials around her to help her in this situation. If she was not resourceful, it might have ended worse for her; the other girls might have hurt her more. Later, Melba showed resourcefulness when a boy tried to trip her, so Melba “stepped on his foot, hard” (Beals 205). She did not just let it go and move on; she fought back. Melba found ways to get back at the kids that hurt her. Another moment of resourcefulness happens after explaining to General Clinger that his soldiers are not helping the nine when she says, “I could take care of myself and speak up to white folks, even if my mother and father sometimes feared doing so” (Beals 171). Melba is shown to be someone that does not just let herself be walked over. She knows that she deserves better than that. Melba fights to be seen as equal and will tell people when they are doing something wrong. Melba’s resourcefulness is key in the many experiences she went …show more content…
When Andy showed up at the store Melba was in, she “tried to behave as though she were not alarmed” and “casually examined items that lay on the counter” so that she could stealthily move away from Andy (Beals 225). She knows that she needs to get away without making a big scene. The reader can see Melba’s cleverness here because she quickly thinks of a way to leave and find her family without causing more problems. Another instance of her cleverness is when the book says, “He complimented me, saying I was articulate and asked if I could write” (Beals 121). Melba is so well-spoken and clever that she can write an article on her experiences in an organized and sophisticated way and get multiple compliments on it. She knows how to word things and how to seem mature in her writing. Melba’s cleverness also appears when someone calls Melba and tells her they know where she lives, and Melba says, “I could not tell Mama and the others that he knew so much about us, so I choked back my tears” (Beals 61). She knows that if she tells the others, it will scare them. She finds a way to hide it from them to keep them out of fear. She quickly realizes what she must do. Melba must be clever so that she can quickly create plans to get herself out of terrible
Melba did not feel safe with the troops and was constantly harassed and attacked by students during school. She was spat on, beaten, called repulsive insults. Teachers and the school administration, did nothing except enabled this behavior to persist, leaving Melba on her own to defend herself. When Melba first discussed entering Central High I was excited for her because I know that she would have on impact on changing the school system
Melba Pattillo Beals was born on the same day of the Pearl Harbor attack. When Melba was born, she was detected scalp infection in which cause multiple medical complications. Her life was at risk due to the fact that she was African American and was not given proper medical care by the doctors. The doctors and nurses did not do much to save newborn Melba. Melba’s mother, Lois, took it to herself to help her daughter survive.
After serving a year in a harsh, maximum-security facility that treats its inmates like slaves, Mathabane's father is transformed and descends into sullenness, rage, and reckless behavior. How poverty and hardship can break a person's spirit until they sink so low that they become a burden on others is illustrated by Mathabane's father's descent. Even though his gambling and drinking cost the family money that they badly need for food and other essentials, they symbolize a desire to escape from reality. The fact that Mathabane's father refers to Mathabane's mother as "the woman he bought" shows that, in accordance with tribal law, he totally owns her. This puts such tribal ideas in a negative light and supports Mathabane's mother's desire to convert Mathabane to
[She] struggles to regain [her] composure” (258). Melba is so confused about everything going on in her life at the time, that she is having difficulty comprehending truth versus lie. Eventually, she left this environment and found positive influences, like Johnny, which developed her kind personality. Despite her triumph, she is insecure because she lacks domestic skills, this becomes the reason she refuses to tell Johnny about Minny, “Please, I want him to think I can do it on my own. I want him to think I’m… worth the trouble” (44). Furthermore, she strives to please others because of her lack of confidence. She also assumes the best in others, shown when Celia concludes that Minny’s warning about Hilly’s animosity towards her is a chance at reconciliation, “Well, no wonder she can’t stand me!..
During Melba’s experience at Little Rock High School she showed perseverance in many ways, specifically through her bravery, strength, and intelligence, these are all characteristics of never underestimating what you can do. One of the most
Melba shares her story and what she did to overcome the intense obstacles that tried to prevent her from an equal education. Beals was interviewed about her memoir and is quoted saying "Until I am welcomed everywhere as an equal simply because I am human, I remain a warrior on a battlefield that I must not leave. I continue to be a warrior who does not cry but who instead takes action. If one person is denied equality, we are all denied equality. "
The determination to live comes from human nature. But the urge of giving up when we come across a difficult problem is also a part of human nature. There a few people in this world that have the characteristics of resilience. As author Kendra Cherry describes them, "People that are able to keep their cool have what psychologists call resilience, or an ability to cope with problems and setbacks" (Source A; Cherry, 1). An example of someone who has the characteristics of resilience is a bombardier name Louis (Louie) Zamperini.
This further confirms that she is very intelligent and can outwit all the men who have taken over her home. The idea of a woman who can outsmart men is also very powerful and
Melba realized what a big burden she had took on. She was scared, she realized that it wasn’t as easy as she thought. Melba stated in the book “ Sensations of courage, fear, and challenge haunted me.” This gave Melba hope she knew she had to go back. Melba lost friends because of this it stated “Anxious to catch their attention I waved out the window with a loud “Hi”.”

A deceiving student, Macca, dominates both Ruth and fellow victim, Philip. No one attempts to control this, not even Mrs Canmore who only warns the bullies. One student, Ruth, comes from a tough background; she is a soldier against the Macca War. Despite the consequences, Ruth becomes a quiet hero; this inspires the audience. Throughout the story, the author portrays Ruth as a shred of hope for the other characters.
Mathilde has to learn the hard way that greediness does not result in good outcomes. She also learns that honesty is always the best policy, and with these lessons she has to go through the consequences of her actions. Along with being greedy and dishonest, Mathilde is also very ungrateful for all of the hard work that her husband has put in to support her. “Hard work doesn’t build character for her; it signifies a lack of power and status on the part of the worker.” (Miller)
She has very strong mind powers, so that when she gets angry she can use them to shut people out or to make them go away. Having the terrible family she had made her love the ones that treated her with love and everyone who showed her love made her the happiest person on Earth. After all, Matilda is the character that reminds me most of myself.
