Respecting someone or something contrasts with being indifferent and careless. In fact, it is quite easy to recognize the absence of respect; meanwhile, it is much more difficult to define respect in our daily interactions with people. Some environmentalists suggest that it is getting easier to survive without being respected (Fromm, 2016). For example, someone can inherit a lot of money, so his/her employees’ respect stops being necessary or desired. Someone can also earn a large sum of money through his/her own talent which is valued, as being a good football player does not mean to be respected, perhaps because of the inappropriate behavior towards his team mates. Men often apply abusive verbal expressions and elements of violence to become worth of respect in the other’s eyes (Anderson, 1994). Women usually deal with some different types of issues, thus, the methods can also differ. Their conflicts are mainly based on assessments of appearances or attempts to influence other people’s opinions about women’s behavior. Thus, the ways of becoming respected by others are based mainly on the attractive appearance; however, we would better not to underestimate their intellectual abilities which can also be a powerful source of high appreciation and admiration. Apart from that, there are less appropriate ways of gaining respect among other females, namely, gossips. For example, at school, one girl can say something negative, not necessarily truthful, about another one in the class. The gossip comes from one person to another, casting aspersions on someone’s name. The accused person should find the way to defend herself what can lead to conflicts (Anderson, 1994). So, men choose to solve issues by means of violence, women prefer to defer in situations of conflict. Increasingly, teenage girls are becoming more inclined toward violent conflict solutions what in their opinion can make them more respected by school friends. For some of us, it may take years to finally reach the feeling of being respected and valued at school, at home, at work, etc. If it can be so challenging for an average person to earn respect, then what a person with mental or physical impairments can expect? Basically, they are not protected from any kind of abuse, no matter how hard the society and government try to create appropriate life-conditions for them. We are taught at school and possibly at home that respect is a universal feeling which is applicable to everybody and everything that deserve our respect.
