What Is The Best Way To Respond To Conflict? "To thine own self be true”, Polonius once said in William Shakespeare's famous play Hamlet. In response to conflict, this character’s words has proven to be an effective way of dealing with tough situations. Although some may argue a better response to conflict is adaptation, individuals experiences such as Anne Frank and Sophie Scholl have shown that is not the case. In “Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler's Shadow” and an excerpt from “The Diary of Anne Frank”, the young girls experience the oppression of their views and beliefs. In his speech to Parliament and the people, Winston Churchill says, “... To wage war against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime” (Churchill). By continuing to stay true to his belief that what the Germans were doing was wrong, Winston’s thought process was impacted for the better by his increase in commitment. He was positively affected because it caused him to find it important enough to give it his all and change the way Winston viewed the situation. A professor at Harvard relays, “In our practice, social-psychological concepts inform both the process and the content of interaction in problem-solving workshops, which are the major tools of interactive problem-solving. The process is designed to encourage active listening, joint thinking, and the development of working trust. The content addresses collective needs and fears, perceptions of self and other, national narratives and identities, and conflict norms” (Kelman). Through the process of remaining true to oneself is improved in ways such as joint-thinking because it strengthens the way the brain works. It creates a basis to build off of that assists in everyday thinking. Author Ellen Kandell describes, “It’s easy to get pushed into a visual and emotional tunnel by external forces and internal feelings; to start seeing only the parts of others and ourselves that fit the story we’re already telling” (Kandell). Due to the comprehension of an individual’s self, it is simpler stay true to oneself and therefore understand the situation. In return, the situation can be handled better and the person involved as a whole is more mindful of their ways of thinking. Through the dedication to oneself, thought process is improved
