How does the social position affect the person and their surroundings? As M.R.C. Kasasian said “The poor, are kind to each other, but that is because they have nothing to lose, ' he said. 'The rich cannot afford to be”. Strictly based on external influences are people’s decisions, one of those influences being their placement within society. People in different social classes within a community, causing them to behave differently than their peers. In the book The Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson, written by Lois Simmie is a true story of love and murder. John, married to Polly in Scotland, moves to Canada, after a business failure back in Scotland to begin a new life. In Canada, John’s life takes a radical turn. Heavily influenced by his arrangement within society, are not only John’s decisions as well as behavior, but lifestyle; which radically change throughout the book. Being a police officer, John does many things that he gets away with that other residents of Canada con not get away with. John’s position within society led him to make poor decisions. Above all, John’s position within the society assured people he is a principled person, correspondingly leading him to make poor decisions. Many things the ordinary people would be confronted with, John does not encounter.

By definition self preservation is the “..set of behaviors by means of which individuals attempt to preserve their own existence and the psychical processes that establish these behaviors..”. For The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, self preservation has been shown to have affected multiple characters, including John Proctor, Samuel Parris, and Abigail. In The Crucible, self preservation is also the greatest motivation .

The laws during this time did not protect Crispin. Some would agree that Crispin should have killed John Aycliffe. and some would disagree. The Author Charles Frazier wrote in his book Cold Mountain “[No] matter what a waste a man has made of ones life, it is ever possible to find some path to redemption, however partial” John Proctor is a prime example of this quote. Towards the beginning of the play Miller gives the reader an impression that he is a selfish and immoral man that does not care about his family or the feelings of his wife, Elizabeth. As the play goes on however Miller’s representation of proctor can sway the opinions they have of John when he decides to let himself be hanged for good reason. Within the short timeline of the story John Proctor was able to look past his mistakes and restored his morals.

His journey shows that honesty and loyalty are very important traits to have. He redeems himself by being selfless and helping other people rather than thinking of himself. John Proctor qualifies as a tragic hero because his wrongdoings lead to his downfall. This downfall helps John to forgive himself which makes him a better person at the end of the story. Everyone has their own difficult challenges that they have to overcome. For example, John Proctor has to deal with his mistake of having an affair with Abigail Williams. Integrity, pride, and a good reputation are important to John and also to myself. I believe that I can relate to John Proctor because of the way he handles different obstacles.

Throughout the book The Crucible we see many, honest, courageous, and even weak characters who significantly change the stories direction. In this book we experience Betty Warren, the weakest character, Rev. John Hale who is the most courageous character, and of course John Proctor who is the most honest character in the story. All three of these important characters are the very roots of this book and make the story what it is.

People worry about upholding positive reputations, because they have strong beliefs to be well known for their future generations. John Proctor did not want to raise his kids and live under a negative reputation, even though they already had a bad reputation, leading his to making the wrong decision in taking his life to protect his reputation. By doing this, John left behind his pregnant wife and kids, left behind an even worse reputation for his family, and wasn't able to prove Abigail guilty.

In the novel The Pigman, John shows more maturity by becoming more and more compassionate throughout the novel. For example, when Mr. Pignati, Lorraine, and John all went to the zoo together John pays for the peanuts to give to Mr. Pignati so he can give the peanuts to Bobo.
