The different formats of shopping activity have progressed from the earliest civilisations in isolated kingdoms to the interconnected world of today. This journey of evolution has involved a continuous process of change (Class notes, 2016). You could argue that one of the first instances of commercial interior design began when the first food and trade market stalls opened up in Mesopotamia. Christine M. The retail experience of a supermarket is described by Châtel and Hunt, (2003) in their books ‘Retailisation’ as mundane and tedious, they believe that the only way to make supermarket shopping more exciting is by turning them into a destination with educational or entertainment facilities. Supermarkets today, are a destination for all types of retail to converge into one space. It is logical and organised to allow the user to easily navigate their way around, the signage and packaging are generally bold and generic. The supermarkets bring a quality and ease to urban life. Mesher, (2014) suggests that what the supermarket does do, however, ‘is enable the maintenance of the current pace of living with its convenience, in an environment that is contemporary and fulfilling of aspirations’.

Fashion has a massive impact on the way in which designers approach retail development. Interiors are designed in line with the current fashion trends, materials, colours and graphics. Mesher, (2014) indicates that ‘Fashion has played an important role throughout history in portraying class, wealth and heritage’.
