Introduction to Reverse Engineering
Each time technology evolves, it breaks barrier between the new products and markets. The beginning of 1990s focused on digitalizing the physical forms by using geometric processes. These lead to reverse and forward engineering which were technically intended to change the manufacturing designs. Reverse engineering is model in which commercial parts are re-designed using CAD in order to reveal its design hide and re-manufacturing them efficiently. It is a process of creating an engineering and manufacturing design with the accessible data from the existing parts and their assemblies. The key attributes of a market system are competition and innovation, in order to stay ahead reverse engineering was adopted. …show more content…

The company is using 3D technology of reverse engineering. The company was using this technology from another company called Geomagic a provider of 3d solutions, mass customization and quality assurance. The company was using activities such as footwear customization, decreasing lead time, increasing quality consistency and decreasing manufacturing waste from Geomagic. The company products lasts a year across its production line. Where the products were hand modified which were shipped to manufacturing facilities where the outdated lasts were thrown away, unless they could be recreated. The new 3D process decreased the hand modified products used for manufacturing. By doing so material wastage had been reduced and discarded the filters used for producing new shaped sculptures. The scanning of the shoe took a few minutes to obtain a digital reconstruction and have an accurate information of lasts produces in a certain time duration. A complex or a whole shoe took about a few hours to extract information. They provided software that helped spend up the process. The time taken to produce single prototype reduced from 2 weeks to a single day to produce three to four new styles. Software’s are used to measure the material content. The vast use of Geomagc’s software’s lead Timberland to be one of the companies following mass
