Abstract In the contemporary capitalist society, the marketing of higher education adopts a highly capitalist-focused rhetoric, with commercials promoting students’ choices in favour of specific educational establishments for financial and not intellectual reasons. Educational institutions use various methods and techniques of persuasion to frame the audience’s beliefs and values in favour of certain educational choices. In connection with pervasive presence of propaganda techniques in marketing, this paper presents a visual and rhetorical analysis of higher education print advertisements’ analysis. The advertisement uses a range of rhetorical strategies, such as humor, hyperbole, repetition, and visual imagery to establish Old Spice as a desirable and masculine brand. One of the key factors that contributed to the success of the Old Spice ad was its ability to tap into cultural and societal trends.
Through Thoreau’s entire essay, “Reading”, revolves around the idea of reading being the way to immortality. He calls for a new society, one that does not focus on the materialistic things in life, but instead on creating an intellectual human culture. Thoreau believes that neither property nor money are true inheritances, but that “books are the treasured wealth of the world and the fit inheritance of generations and nations.” (82). This passage demonstrates Thoreau’s idea of society’s way of aiming too low, instead of striving to read well.
Kathryn Stockett successfully uses rhetorical devices to get the reader to feel and understand the perspectives of the protagonists. Stockett uses pathos, ethos, and logos in her book, since the book about social injustice. The topics in the book range from inequality of the sexes to social classes and racism, Stockett is successful in getting the reader to reflect while reading the book and the themes of the book have a clear presence. We see Stockett use ethos and pathos in the very first chapters when we learn that Hilly doesn't like Minny and Minny doesn't want to say why at first, but the incident with Ms. Holbrook was affecting her chances of getting a job because of the influence Hilly has over this suburban society. In some instances where Stockett uses ethos, pathos is also included in her writing.
"Common Sense" was one of the most important pieces of literature in early America, because it was extremely influential to many people throughout all of American colonies. The colonist came to America to escape religious boundaries. They wanted to be able to worship God freely. Thomas Paine uses this to his advantage by using scriptural quotes, pathos, to convince his audience that it is common sense for the colonists to break completely with Great Britain. He says that "a monarchy is terrible, and to have a king is not only an unsuccessful way to rule a nation, but it is also a sin."
Style is another form of rhetoric. Moving past correctness and clarity, we work with the true rhetorical side of style- appropriateness and ornament. “Appropriateness meaning to say or do whatever is fitting in a given situation”. Appropriateness would be better defined as situational propriety, like Kairos. For instance, when a person receives a call at a library, they’ll answer their phone call and the people around them will hush the person speaking on the phone.
1) Of the three primary units we have completed in this course, the most challenging unit for me was the argument (persuasion) unit. I was surprised at how much I struggled both in the pre-writing process and in the writing process. To begin with, because I love arguments, I had trouble choosing a topic. In the end, I decided to challenge myself with the policy that requires sex offender to be added to a public registry policy. Instead of going with my initial stance (opposition), I decided to flip the scrip and argue the opposite of what I believe (proposition).
1. Of the three primary units we have completed in this course, I learned the most from the Rhetorical Analysis unit. As well as being educational, this unit was enjoyable and thought-provoking. Evaluating the argumentative essays both set a foundation for an argumentative paper and taught me how to effectively detect logical fallacies. Until this unit, I was unaware of the several logical fallacies that people use to argue their position.
For this rhetorical analysis essay I decided to reflect upon the somewhat recent documentary titled “The Social Dilemma”. From gen-zians to baby boomers, this film was dedicated to educating people on the impact of social media on today’s society as we have entered a tech-frenzy world. Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
I’m fairly confident that I at the very least passed the test with a 3, maybe even a 4. I think that I did as well as I usually do on multiple choice, which hopefully means that I got more than half of them right, but there were more than a few questions that I had trouble with and I ended up not being very confident with my answers for them, however on the whole I think I did alright. For the essays, I spent WAY too much time on the DBQ (I went into the rhetorical analysis time in order to finish it) and I didn’t do a very good time synthesising and using the sources. As Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Donovan Livingston, a graduate at Harvard Graduate School of Education, has similar views on education. His passionate and inspiring speech called “Lift Off” was given at HGSE’s Commencement Ceremony on May 25, 2016. The speech discusses the importance of education as well as the obstacles and injustices students, especially those of color, have experienced throughout history in getting an education.
