Thomas Paine's most effective rhetorical strategy has to be his incessant allusions to different Biblical elements in order to arouse the idea of independence. One of the best examples of this comes as early as the first paragraph, where he discusses the absurdity of Britain's claim that they have the right to bind all of their citizens in every matter or case. However, Paine retorts with a response of his own, saying, "for so unlimited a power can belong only to God. . . ." (1). Here Paine, knowing that most of his readers are devout, Protestant churchgoers, briefly introduces the notion that Britain is overstepping its authority in such a way that it's almost as if they are trying to play God. Henry Patrick’s claim in “Speech to the Virginia Convention” is that Britain is constructing an army to seize control of the United States and a war between these countries are inevitable. To validate his claim, Henry uses various rhetorical devices and evidence. The first piece of evidence Henry provides to progress his argument is when he states, “I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience. I know no way of judging the future but by the past” (171). Henry claims that his experience for the last 10 years with British ministry has garnered enough experience for him to realize that there is a war coming. He uses pathos, logos, and ethos because he appeasl to peoples emotions and how they feel about going to war with Britain. Henry is a person who fights to get what he wants. He's a man that believes fighting is the only way of getting freedom. Henry is a credible speaker because of this he gets some to agree with him on going to war with Britain, and some still disagree becasue some say they are not ready, they are weak.

There are many and reasons that the United States is a free country today and Patrick Henry is one of those reasons. Henry was a loyal patriot and believed that the United States had to fight back against the British before it was too late.

“Give me Liberty or give me Death!” It was 1775 the time were colonist were trying to break free from British troops and Government. Colonist steadily paying unfair taxes, on all newspaper and public documents which the British Parliament named the “ Stamp Act”. The colonist feared that they would be overruled and would never get there freedom. The only thing they wanted was to get their rights and a new government. On the 23rd of March 1775 Patrick Henry gave the Speech to the Virginia Convention, At St.John's Church. When giving the speech Patrick Henry uses logical explanations to persuade the colonist.

At the Virginia convention in 1774, the delegates such as Patrick Henry, gather to decide their course of action, in a time where their primary goal was to rid themselves of their oppressor, Great Britain. Patrick Henry addresses the other delegates and discloses his opinion on what course of action the people should take. In his speech at the Virginia Convention, Patrick Henry forcefully influences the audience to go to war with Great Britain through diction, figurative language and rhetorical devices and by confronting them with their current position of danger in the face of the inevitable British Invasion.

Rhetorical devices are used to appeal to the audience and Henry uses them effectively in that way. Henry first uses ethos to appeal to the morals of the audience by saying ,“Sir, we are not weak, if we make a proper use of the means which the God of nature hath placed in our power.” Henry is appealing to the religious morals of the audience by using God's power to persuade the audience to think that going to war with Great Britain is the right thing to do. The people are more likely to listen to something when they think God gives them the power to do it than when Henry simply asks for the audience to listen. Another rhetorical device Henry uses is pathos to appeal to the audience's emotions. Henry states, “Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God!” This appeals to emotion by comparing America to being under control of Great Britain like slaves are under control of their masters. When put in this perspective, members of the committee are more likely to realize the extent of what is happening and what needs to happen to stop it from going

Lawyer and politician, Patrick Henry in his speech, “Give me Liberty Or Give Me Death” (March 23, 1775), explains that he give this plea to urge the old dominion to form militias to defend itself against British. He supports his claim by first using a religious reference to express the themes of freedom, equality, and independence. Then uses a selection of other strategies like rhetorical question and allusion to disprove the opposing arguments and clarify the point he is making. Patrick Henry purpose is to fight back and he wants other to fight with him in order for independence. He creates a powerful and commanding tone for the second Virginia convention.

On March 23, 1775, “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” was heard all throughout St. John 's Church. These famous words were not only from a great speaker looking to have his voice heard, but the words truly had an everlasting impact on freedom’s history. In the speech, “Give me Liberty or Give me Death” by Patrick Henry, he used figurative languages such as allusions, parallelism, and biblical references to bring his speech to life. These examples are just a few ways that Henry used literary devices, to create emotion and realism. In this specific piece of literature, qualities like patriotism and individualism are exceedingly prominent, this all being due to Henry’s use of literary devices.

.“No man thinks more highly than I do of patriotism” (Henry). Patrick Henry lived from 1736-1799 and was a tall, lank, somber-looking man that dressed like a preacher. He was a lawyer at age 29 and had a speech against the Stamp Act. He wrote his Speech to Virginia Convention to get the people to vote for him for presidency. Patrick’s Speech to Virginia Convention was in 1775 attempting to convince the people that no one cares more about patriotism, God, and their country more than he does. Patrick Henry’s most persuasive technique is pathos because he is using what the people want most, what appeals to them more, and their emotions, to convince the audience.

“ Give me liberty or give me death”,( Patrick Henry). The most well known speech given by the prestigious Patrick Henry on March 23, 1775 expressing his thoughts and feelings about fighting back against Britain and protecting their beloved country. At this time the British was defeating America terribly which had made Patrick Henry feel as though his freedom was being jeopardized. Patrick Henry’s speech was an attempt to persuade the american citizens not to just sit and do nothing, he wanted to fight back against Britain. Patrick Henry felt as though many of the citizens were not aware of the seriousness of what was happening and that the needed to have a wake up call. Patrick Henry's speech was to connect to the audience and show then exactly how serious this issue is and he did that by using a lot of emotion. The most effective persuasive technique that Patrick Henry used in his famous “ Speech to the Virginia Convention” is pathos because it was used sufficiency throughout his speech.

Thomas Paine, a local pamphleteer in the pre-Revolutionary War era, wrote a convincing pamphlet to any colonists who were not already supporting the war for independence from Great Britain. In his argument, Paine uses rhetorical strategy, an emotional aspect, and divine revelation towards the citizens to create a very moving, passionate, and convincing call to arms.

Convincing people of something or to do something is not an easy task but Patrick Henry's “Speech to the Second Virginia Convention” shows how well someone can persuade people when they trust you, appeal to their emotions, or back up what you are saying with facts...ethos, pathos, and logos. The purpose of this speech is to persuade the colonist to fight against the british. Patrick is talking to the members of the virginia convention and what they need to do to become free.

During this era people believed in logic and reasons to make decisions. Therefor a lot of people at the time used persuasive techniques to make their point.
