David Foster Wallace is an American writer. He spoke at the Kenyon Commencement Address in 2005, where he gave a speech to the graduating class of the year. David tells the graduates of Kenyon College what the true meaning of a liberal arts degree is, and how they should go about finding it. His primary goal was to inspire students with various lessons he learned throughout his life so that they may graduate just a little more enlightened as they were before. Jobs does this through the use of anecdotes that portray the literary techniques of logos, counterargument, and allegory to tell the students to not let limitations get the best of you, get back up when you or knocked down and to live life to the fullest.
The speech "This is Water", is a speech delivered to the class of Kenyon College 2005. David Foster wrote this speech to inform the struggles and lifestyle of what happens after college. Foster uses his lifestyle on an everyday basis to give examples of the life after college. Therefore, David ends his speech with "It is unimaginably hard to do this, to stay conscious and alive, day in and day out. The author 's primary focus in “Some Lessons from The Assembly Line” is to bring out the situation he went through during his time at work and helping us appreciate education. In his award-winning article, “Some Lessons from The Assembly Line”, Andrew Braaksma tells you how important going to college is, getting a good job, and working hard. The first key point that the author uses is the importance college. "Factory life has shown me what my future might have been like had I never gone to college in the first place." ( Braaksma 2 ).
In the article “Want To Get Into College? Learn To Fail” by Angel B. Perez the main idea was that colleges want to know the real you,the imperfect you not the just the great things you’ve accomplished over the year ,but also the failure you had to overcome. The reason why they want to know this is to see if you can overcome failing a class or two just to how you can you handle this, because life is not easy and healthy,family and money sometimes can get in the way of things but the goal is to make you succeed. Another thing I learned that I think is a main point is that parents are the ones pressuring their children to be perfect. So much that they didn 't want their child to take a risk in a class if there was a possibility for failure.

Keating seems to have set out to break the mold of the tradition Welton teacher. He also seems to want his students to also break the mold and think for themselves. He accomplishes this goal by showing them how to look at the world differently and showing them that emotions are not something you should bottle up, but put on a page. Keating also pushes the importance of Carpe Diem or “seizing the day” (Williams,1989). The boys, in turn, take interest in Mr. Keating’s teachings, they take the idea if they are going to die one day, to heart, and begin to live their lives to the fullest.
Doug wants Coach to help Lucas, who is dealing with his own burdens of war, but Coach always brushes off his requests. Finally, one day outside the library, Coach Reed says to Lucas, “‘Maybe you could come work for me’,” (Schmidt pg. 337). This influences Doug indirectly because Lucas now has a job, making him feel purposeful, and the money Lucas makes is going towards Doug’s future college education.
