Overall, these assignments are the best I have written this semester. My best piece is my argumentative essay about funding Planned Parenthood. Within this essay, I debate the pros and cons of removing federal funding for Planned Parenthood, and then I finish the essay with my final, educated opinion. I was assigned this topic at random,
I was unsure of my overall writing skills upon entering this course, but with each individual skill that was taught to us, I was able to connect all necessary components for success. In my previous semester in college I took several general education courses that had lengthy writing requirements and I was able to get these assignments done but not without many struggles and sub-par final products. By actively participating in class and completing all of the assigned work, this course has laid the foundation for me to continue to improve my writing skills. During the entirety of this course I consistently worked on all the of the technical parts of my projects. By utilizing both required text books, I made sure that each one of the major assignments met the
In triad K, I have been able to reflect on my literacy journey, create amazing study habits, and learn more about rhetoric. In addition, I have learned how I can use rhetoric in everyday life. Although I know I still have not achieved the complex writing, I strive to get to, I still make use of what I already know and just try to build on it. Writing essays such as these and the others we have done in the class have really helped transform me into a better writer. We talked about literacy sponsors and had to write a literacy narrative, where I reflected my growth in writing, and created goals on how I would like to improve.
In my four years of high school I have taken advanced, honors, and two years of advanced placement English courses. High school has so far prepared me to write fluently and effectively, it has also primarily prepared me for the kind of writing that was required of me in this course. College-level writing is important to me because it has allowed me the chance to further my writing skills and knowledge of different genres of essays. Just this course alone has already taken my writing ability way beyond what I have accomplished at a high school level. College-level writing courses are important because they will teach me how to better convey thoughts, ideas, and facts in simple and clear language.
In the numerous of drafts, you write, and edit is when you find out what you generally wanted to vocalize. When you’re given the chance to step back, you realize that you are the best editor for your own work. Otherwise; you tend to crucify your paper. While scanning your paper, it is important for you as a writer to keep your eyes out for critical information, the meaning, and who your audience may be. While editing a draft an individual should do a quick scan then eventually analyze word by word.
As an English student this semester, I have learned how to develop essays in an appropriate educated way in English 101. I have learned how to find and properly use different sources in my essays as well as improving on MLA format. This class has also improved my writing skills in my work place. I presently work as a secretary for a company, and my job consists of writing letters to people from time to time. The skills that I have learned has dramatically improved those letters, allowing them to appear more professional.
Throughout this semester, I have grown as a writer in many ways. I looked back on all the essays I have done and I can see the improvement throughout each essay I did. The three essays that I will be using in my portfolio are the Writing and Reading History Essay, the Non-Academic Discourse Essay, and the Rhetorical Analysis Essay. The reason that I chose the three essays were because of the improvement I could see throughout each one. The first essay in my portfolio is the “Non-Academic Discourse” essay.
As time ticked by, my hands rushed to scribble down letters to form the first essay of the first semester, then the second, and finally the last. Throughout the first semester, I experienced writing essays in a short amount of time while trying to maintain the essay’s quality. I believe that although I did well in some parts of my Summer Reading Essay, The Odyssey Essay, and Character showing Empathy Essay, there were pieces of the essays that could be improved and in the future, I aim to achieve the goals I have set up to enhance my work. In the Summer Reading Essay, there are areas that were done well, as well as areas that need improvement. After receiving the prompt for this essay, I hurried to the books to find textual evidence.
As a former AP Lang student, I feel that this class has been very beneficial for me in that it has allowed me to apply the techniques and strategies I learned last year toward more relevant subjects. Having the freedom of choosing topics to write about for our various essays made this class more enjoyable than the other English classes that I have taken. AP Lang focused heavily on the techniques of writing solid essays, but instead of writing about useful topics, we analyzed the short stories provided on the exams. Writing a personal narrative essay was very helpful in my college application process and allowed me to employ the same kind of strategies that I learned in class into my college essays. Likewise, creating a cover letter taught me many useful strategies that I will definitely put to use when it comes time for me to submit an official cover letter to a company.
As a reader one has to know what to look for and identify the main idea and understand what the author is trying to argue. Before taking Writing 10 I felt I was a good reader and able to identify the main idea in a prompt, but little did I really know. After going through the research process and trying to identify reliable sources I have essentially cut out the unnecessary information and I go straight to the idea or argument being made by the author. As of before, I would focus on every detail of the writing. Having been assigned readings and having discussions about the readings during class, I soon realized that writing is about an argument being made with supporting evidence.
As our final assignment for cornerstone we were tasked with revising our rhetorical analysis. I received a B, 81%, and by the end of my revisions have “A” quality work. During recent assignments and papers for other classes I realized the thesis was one of the first few sentences in the paper. As I was reading my paper I noticed that the purpose of the author writing this wasn 't until almost halfway into the first paragraph. My first revision was to put “The purpose of this article was for the author, Emily Heyer, to express her thoughts and opinions for gay marriage, and to share her views on why Iowa should have been pro gay marriage in 2011.” as the second sentence and make it flow.
They have taught me that structuring your paper is the key element to good writing. Somehow, I have learned a great deal last semester, which was difficult but I will be able to put towards me up and coming writing intensive courses. The readings throughout those two classes have helped me to understand the dos and
Hello, I am Connor Love. I am writing this letter as a soon to be former student of Katy Leuschen 's "Waves of Change" writing 111 class. The first semester of my collegiate career has taught me many valuable lessons, from learning how to better succeed academically to how to deal with the flu without my mother. The lessons I have learned in writing class have not only helped my writing abilities grow, but also have helped me improve in other aspects of my life. During "Waves of Change" I learned how to revise my work, more importantly, that uncertainty during the writing process is normal, and revise my thinking.
I am very good at making sure my writing is precise when coming to commas, explanation points, periods, etc. My word selection is also strong, in which I use stronger words to make the sentences sound good, and overall the paper more well rounded. My weaknesses as a writer is sometimes being able to explain my points that make sense to others, or sometimes connecting different points together to make one topic. I believe my writing has improved in the last quarter in such ways as being able to use different types of inventions and different types of writing modes. Before being in Writing 115, I struggled with doing different kinds of modes and inventions, and I feel as if I have improved on these areas and has made me an overall well rounded writer.
