Rhetorical Analysis: Portfolio

Kathryn Stockett successfully uses rhetorical devices to get the reader to feel and understand the perspectives of the protagonists. Stockett uses pathos, ethos, and logos in her book, since the book about social injustice. The topics in the book range from inequality of the sexes to social classes and racism, Stockett is successful in getting the reader to reflect while reading the book and the themes of the book have a clear presence.

In part 4: Critical study, we have examined the text The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, I have attempted to replicate a passage from his work to exemplify both the physical and the abstract things I carry with me on a daily basis. Through my written task, “The Things I Carry”, I have attempted to capture an honest introspection of a girl of indomitable spirit despite all the ordeals in her life by mimicking Tim O’ Brien’s writing style.

Speeches are used to commemorate points of history, and inform the general public of the product of their history but what makes a speech so impacting on it’s audience? Rhetorical devices give speeches and works of literature a way that can convey feelings or ideas to a viewer. When addressing during times of war or chaos, people such as Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill used these terms to better connect with their audience. Without these tools of the english language, dialogue and literature would be all the more dull and unappealing. However, with these useful instruments, writers and speakers can better communicate through some of the many rhetorical devices.

Domestic violence against women has been a problem for many years, and it is still an issue in today’s society. Women all over the world fight against violence, oppression, and discrimination. Therefore, it has been necessary to develop campaigns to raise awareness towards the ongoing problem. One of the campaigns that have been trying to raise awareness is the campaign “Fearless”, by the organization ActionAid, which is conveyed through a picture. The picture and its text emphasize that women are able to end violence if they stand together, which is seen through figures, linguistic tools, and structural elements.

As Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Donovan Livingston, a graduate at Harvard Graduate School of Education, has similar views on education. His passionate and inspiring speech called “Lift Off” was given at HGSE’s Commencement Ceremony on May 25, 2016. The speech discusses the importance of education as well as the obstacles and injustices students, especially those of color, have experienced throughout history in getting an education. Livingston’s graduating classmates who are becoming teachers, as well as teachers and educators in general, are the audience of his speech. He directly speaks about past teachers and experiences with education he's had, and his hopes for future teachers.
